Tastino I really like your photos, and the idea with black header and footer just works so very well. Your pictures look very crispy according to the image quality. This makes me wanna buy this lens even more!

Agreed! Tastino, your shots are very nice to look at. The black bars and desaturation really give them a cinematic feel.
Thank you guys! ;)

Let me ask the group...I own a 70-200 f/2.8 IS Mk II. Would I see enough of a difference with the 135 @f/2 to make it worth buying a nice used one?

I have had both and kept the 135mm L. Not because of IQ so much as weight and that slightly larger aperture does help, since I find myself needing all the light I can get.

The 70-200 is absolutely supurb while the 135 is more of a speciality lens. I really would not recommend that you switch, and I doubt that you would gain anything unless you shoot in very dark areas with moving subjects, for stills, the IS will get you there and then some.

My 135mmL is not going away anytime soon!

I have and use both. For low light action shooting, the 135mm f/2L is very useful. It's also great for tight portraits where you have a busy background that you want to blur out. For general use, the 70-200mm f2.8L IS II is great. The IQ with the prime is no better than that with the zoom (haven't we come a long way?), so unless you have a specific need for an f/2 lens, I'd say stick with the zoom.

Personally, I have 7-8x more shots from the 70-200mm II - it's a much more versatile lens. Of the shots with the 135L, 90% of them are shot wider than f/2.8 (mostly f/2-f/2.2).

Re: Canon EF135mm f/2L USM

I got my 135 f/2 purely for photographing pine martens in low light, but I've also used it for near macro work coupled to extension tubes, where you can get some very narrow depth of field effects (which I want to experiment some more with). I've also found myself wanting to do more portrait work since getting it too, simply because of the "look" it gives you. With this lens, it's not just the sharpness, but the whole package it brings you, so it isn't an easy lens to compare to others. For general work though, it probably wouldn't give you anything over the 70-200, it simply isn't quite as versatile.

Re: Canon EF135mm f/2L USM

Looking at images I've retained in lightroom from 2010 and so far in 2011, I see that my favorite lenses are the 135mm L and the 35mmL which I just bought last August. The favorites change depending on what and when I shoot. we have had poor weather so far this year, cold and rainy, but my 24-105 will get lots more use now that things are nicer outdoors. I also have some new lenses not yet reflected in the totals, a 15-85mm and a 35-350mmL. I have a 17mm wide angle, but wide angles just don't get much use from me.

These are only a fraction of the images taken, I toss most of them or I'd be buried.

Lens 2010 2011
24-105mmL 867 244
35mmL 248 1014
50mm 1.4 704 125
85mm 1.8 446 354
100mmL 176 55
135mmL 1005 865
70-200mm f/4 90 230
100-400mm L 146 58

Will you guys stop posting 135mm shots !!!! There's a second hand one in my local camera shop for £700 and I'm itching to go buy it !!!! ;-)

You've gotta scratch that itch, mate! Will be the best decision you've made all week ... possibly all month or all year too!

Oh dear, I am so weak ! Bought it today, lovely example hardly used, looks like new, the previous owner is apparently a "pro" and regular customer, just wasn't using it, so traded in.

My wife ain't happy though ;-)

Oddly enough, if it had LV on it and was some dreadful color . . . and you paid 3x that amount for it, she'd be fine with it, no? ;)
