Here's our latest picture, shot with the 5D mkii and 24-105 f4.

Taken from a small mountain in the English Lake District National Park called Haystacks, looking north west, late evening.

Did someone on CR once call this lens 'garbage" ? ;D
I certainly never did. I love it and use it most of the time. I love the photograph, I hope to go there some day.

Lovely! The lighting, clouds, the green and blue just all come together.

And whoever called it "garbage", I am very willing to relieve that person of the "garbage" ;)

Many thanks Guys.

@rpt, I'm pleased you like the balance of colours colors because when we first produced this picture it disappointed, until we de saturated and gave a much more realistic saturation to the colour, and 'ping' - it worked. I think it looks like Ektachrome shot on 5x4 !

The particular 24-105 that we used for this shot is a very good copy. It holds more resolution in the centre of the frame at f8 than our 50mm f1.4 does at the same aperture

Re: Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM

I bought this lens second hand. Last w/e did a shoot with models in Pin Up style. If the micro-imperfections in their skin are any indication, the lens is plenty sharp on a 5dmkII. Clinically sharp. Kinda gross actually. Pretty happy for what is basically a "kit" lens. I still like my 85mm/1.8 for speed/weight/size, but for a zoom it's pretty decent (or I got a good copy).

Cool pics, how did you get the car blur in the 2nd pic? A neutral density filter?

Thanks. No, I just used f/13, ISO 100. That lowered to speed to 3.2 sec., and I waited for the cars to start moving. I was also exposing a bit to the right, since my 5D2 is overprotective of the highlights on night shots.

I like the second one Sporgon!

Here's another couple of shots with the 24-105. As with others find who use this lens, it's not one you would love, but inevitably so many of my pictures are taken with it.

Taken at 105mm, f4 in the last few minutes of sunlight. Once again IS comes to the rescue.

Re: Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM

I finally replaced my ancient Tamron 28-75 2.8, when the price of the 24-105 got down to $725 last week. It came in a white box with lens hood, pouch and US warranty registration papers. I assume it was part of a kit.

First I did a focus test. The point of focus at F/4 was within the depth of field at both ends of the zoom range, but being a bit obsessive about focus accuracy I put in +1 AFMA at both ends to make it closer to perfect. Then I took the new lens and my 5D3 to the Portland Rose Garden for some practice.

I have to say I am very impressed with the autofocus, center sharpness and color rendering. Edge sharpness is not very important in my work, so I can't comment on that. The folks at LensRentals.com mention this lens as one of their least troublesome lenses, so hopefully it will continue to work well for a long time.

Here is a shot at F/4, 1/400, ISO 200. It's been a while since I had an image that wasn't too naughty to post here!

Re: Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM

I love my 24-105 too.
It's on the camera (5D3) 90% of the time and probably the most versatile lens I own.
I've done entire weddings using just this lens both for stills and movies and I'm still inlove with the colour and contrast it gives.

Here's some shots of the Sydney Harbour Bridge during Sydney's Vivid Festival to show how good it is even at night.
