Re: Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and I just saw the tread about my favorite lens. I'm not sure if it is appropriate but I rather give you the link to my website were most of the images are taken with the Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM. I do have several other lenses in my back but this is the lens that I'm feeling comfortable to use most of the time. Sharp results ( even in low light situations), very flexible focal range ... it is an amazing glass to have among your arsenal of optics.

Sorry as I use low 800 pixel and low dpi export the jpeg compression/reduction may not do the sharpness justice, but it is crisp in the original....crop of the branches attached.

Re: Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Picked up one used today from a local camera shop, test shots have been great so far, gonna get a better feel after I take it on vacation next week

Wanted it as a general purpose everyday lens when my manual primes aren't a good fit

@Sporgon I really enjoy your photograph with the fox hunters on the horses, reminds me of old style painting.
@siegsAR yeh all of my cameras are full frame ( 2 x 5D and 1 x 5D MKII ) ;)
Again, I want to highly recommend this lens to any one out there who is wondering what Canon glass to buy for hes/her camera.

@Nikolay, thanks for the comments. There was an English artist in the 1890's, quite famous now for painting hunting scenes, called George Wright. A lot of his work is now in the US. You've made me think I could get a picture with a similar stamp to his paintings. With the hounds in the frame and no modern hats, cars or tractor wheelings I could get a timeless photograph that could have been taken in the 1890's, had it been possible. :D

Re: Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Great lens!
It´s better than I thought and gives great results, but I like primes more. Not for better quality or sharpness and not that I think every photo is better with shallow DoF but because... I like to use primes.

You guys already know all there is to know about the lens from photozone and the-ditigal-picture. No need to point out the obvious.

Best general purpose lens I have owned. Incredibly sharp IMO - not sure why some people say it is a bad lens. Hythe, England at dusk.

I wonder if this is because there is more sample variation with this lens than others. Canon have turned out thousands of these at a 'reasonable' price and I suspect they're not all assembled to the desired tolerances.

However being a Canon L at least it can be 'post manufacture' fine tuned by specialists, unlike zoom lenses that have elements glued in.

At Building Panoramics we have two: one is perfect, the other is as sharp as a 50mm f1.4 (at say 5.6) on the far left, but quite blurred on the far right.

EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM. Settings for this photo are F4, Shutter 1/100, ISO 640 taken with Canon 5D Mark III. No flash / post-processed through Adobe Lightroom 4.

Re: Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM

I got this lens in a kit with my 5DM3 and I'm upset that I didn't get it sooner. It works great on the 5DM3 and I use it as a walkabout lens. The 24mm on a FF is awesome, and I agree with all the sharpness/contrast, etc. comments.

I've used it for portraiture before with good results, but I prefer my 50 1.4 or 70-200 2.8 M2 for those.

Overall, the 24-105 is one of the best lenses for your dollar, imho.
