Canon EOS R1 & R5 Mark II Firmware v1.3.0 Arriving Soon

Can that be set up already? It can on my R1.

I think all the new bodies have it? I did it on my R8 before I got the R5II.

Also regarding this part of the article "We were told to temper expectations about the R5 Mark II firmware and that a few of the things people want to see, are not coming. More for the video side of things than stills."

Does "More for the video side of things than stills" refer to things people want to see or things that are not coming? Seems syntactically ambiguous. I assume features are more likely to video based on the context of Canon's broader focus on video.

Hijacking a bit off topic. If anyone is a macro gear expert, send me a PM. I don't know what something that is coming on May 13 is, or could be. I don't want to leap the wrong way.
I can't send PMs, probably too new on this site but a longtime reader.

But maybe i can help out, did see a lot of things since 2007. ;)

I need a replacement for my EF 180mm macro on a R1.

Send me a PM or email and i will take a look.

I’m trying not to feel bad comparing it to the Nikon Z8 and its firmware updates. Nikon honestly delivered through firmware almost everything people thought they might save for a future Z8 Mark II.
I’ve been waiting since 2024 for a firmware update just to show the battery status on the top display while the camera is off, along with more personalization and the ability to turn off certain information. Maybe they’re saving this and a few other small features for the R5 Mark III, I’m not sure.

You can turn off and edit all those screens. I am shooting real estate a lot and basicly I have one screen with histogram and big level (you can actually choose small or big one) and clean one. So pushing INFO btn I am quickly switching between those.
OMG! Thank you! That was so much easier than I thought. I’d been trying for ages but just couldn’t see it for looking. After I used AI to give me step-by-step instructions, I was finally able to sort it!
I've set up that INFO button toggle now. Having the big level and a clean view is going to make shooting real estate so much smoother. Thanks for the heads up.

Can I have M-RAW or M-cRAW?
You do realize that both of those aren't actually RAW, right? Have you tried the HEIF option on recent Canon bodies? That gives you better-than-JPEG quality and bit depth, but smaller file sizes. S/M-RAW setting on older bodies resulted in a debayered TIFF, so it had none of the benefits of RAW, like lossless white balance adjustment. It is the equivalent of adding an aftermarket 'TURBO' or 'HEMI' badge to your car, its only use is to make the owner feel better, not actually give better performance or have that feature.

I'm still waiting for the af improvements in the R5 mk2 mentioned about a year ago, but no one is saying anything that I can find relating to this in ages.
Do I assume that we are all now happy with the af (I'm talking still not video)?
There was quite a lot of talk about a firmware update for this I think it was about February last year.......but nothing since......

For me, one button toggle on and off of precapture is my main desire, however, faster shutterspeeds in Av (< in Av the shutterspeeds for some odd reason max out at 1/8000th, which is not enough to preserve highlights in a white dress or shirt with f/1.2, in bright sunlight) and a proper (read; not resettable, other than in official Canon repair-shops) pincode security that need to be punched every 24 hour, would both be at least equally important....

Yea, faster shutterspeeds can be found in M mode, but with AutoISO enabled, it is for one thing nearly impossible to keep the ISO near 100/below 200, and for another, it is VERY easy to accidentally end up at ISO 4000 in bright sunshine and f/1.2, if there suddently is an image to be captured in the shade, been there, done thát, latest this weekend....;- /
-Possibly the problem is that the R5.2 change shutterspeeds in full stops above 1/8000th, but on the R1, that doesn't happen until 1/16.000th, so at least the R1 could have up to 1/16.000th available in Av, but, I can't see that the shutterspeed changing in full stops should be much of a problem, if AutoISO is enabled...???

And I HAVE set up the C1-3 with Av, M and Tv, and with precapture on, but I got other things that I would like to use the C1-3 for, so being able to assign a button to toggle Precapture on and off, would be perfect....

And as I wrote here earlier, it is really stupid that the +/-and WB buttons on top of the R1 aren't programmable, very few people use them, and they are placed perfectly, in terms of easy access....

Seems like most people don't even want new features. There are many customization features missing. For me it is all about the EVF. The limitations about its activations and display are extreme. So much stuff on frame that you cannot disable and the hideous proximity sensor that eat up your battery. How are these not priorities?
Completely agree, even with the screen with only basic info selcted, there's some "noise" in the viewfinder that can't be turned off, stuff that one never ever use, and which clutter the viewfinder, so much that one sometimes struggle to find the things that one actually want to see there....
-Not terribly much, but enough to catch the eye, when one tries to find other things, focus distance for example, my eyes always end up on that one when hecking the exposure compensation, and what focal length one is at, and on the back of the screen, I haven't been able to remove the touch shutter icon, despite having deselected it in the menu....

Also, the image in the viewfinder is very hard and over satuated in color, it is a bit odd, because it is an OLED screen we have in there, on the back of the camera it is a TFT screen, which really ought to be of a lesser quality, but the image on the rear screen is A LOT CLOSER to the image that one actually get, than the OLED screen viewfinder....
