Canon EOS R5 down to $3399 (Reg $3899)

Question: Why get the R6 if you already had the R5? I love my R5 and can't imagine what advantage the R6 would have over it
The MP size of the R5 requires the CF Express card to shoot Hi+ 20 fps. The R6 can shoot redundant 20 fps to both V90 cards with 5 seconds for the buffer to clear. You cannot get 45 MP 20 fps redundant on the R5.
Something felt weird in my burst shots when I moved my primary body from the R6 to R5 and it wasn't until I noticed it in the manual that CF Express is needed for Hi+ that I realized I was not actually getting 20 fps on my shots when I had it set to redundant shooting.

Maybe the R5ii will have dual CF Express slots to allow redundant high frame rate shooting as well as redundant high data video.

Even Nikon has made that segmentation with Z9 and rumoured Z8 specs. Given resolution and how cheap high capacity CFx-B cards have gotten in last year or so it really doesnt make sense for these cameras to keep that SD slot.
Agreed, unless it’s a cheaper model that cannot utilize the throughput and only requires UHS-I cards. If you are buying UHS-II cards to utilize the cameras speed, might as well just get CF Express.
That’s my opinion.

I can't pull the CFe card from my R3 and stick it into my MacBook Pro to transfer images. I can do that with the UHS-II SD card.
In last couple of years most laptops(even high end gaming laptops) have dropped full sized SD slots in favour of micro SD forcing users into buying dedicated readers. Even Apple had dropped SD slots from their laptops until recent versions. There are small sized CFx card readers available now which dont take up much more space than tiny external SSDs/flash drives.

Nikon is in a strange position since they went from CF to XQD while Canon went with SD.
XQD is upgradeable to CF Express so a bunch of cheaper Nikon cameras can use CF Express.
Since those cameras were made for XQD they get none of the performance benefits of CF Express.

I’m aware. But I was being specific. My laptop is a recent Mac with an SD slot. SD cards are also ubiquitously available, CFe are not.

A price drop is a standard business practice, not an indication that we will see an R5 II any time soon.

Did it? A 4 year model cycle is unheard of for Canon. The R6 legitimately shocked me.

In any case, a positive development. I still wish the R8 had a ~30 MP sensor and IBIS.... this is still a bit too heavy for me. But it's getting into the realm of decent value.
yes, generally by end of 2nd year itself these big discounts start to appear with earlier in life some sort freebies bundled with camera. Given these cameras were scalped early due to shortages meant that it stayed at MSRP for longer than usual.

Whilst in the UK last month there were big discounts which seems along lines of US but not as good, £400 off reducing camera to£3899, and £100 off battery grip, as of this month all discounts gone and now back to full price £4299. UK and rest of Europe clearly poor relations on pricing, obviously a smaller market than US, but would be bigger with discounts consistent around world.

The R5 price drop will certainly take some gloss off the Z8... perhaps in a similar way to R3/Z9.
That said, I notice that B&H also have USD500 off the R3 (no bonus grip! ) ie at the same price as the Z9 now.

Of course, there were also inducements for pre-ordering the R5 locally eg custom Canon strap, spare battery (useful) and a small SD card (useless for me). I don't use a strap or want to advertise what camera I am using and I sold it to a happy buyer.

I wouldn't use a grip so if it isn't useful for you then sell it and reduce your overall cost further.
The only time that a grip might be useful for me is for overnight astro landscape which I don't do often and a powerbank is sufficient for charging and a dew heater.

Reasons for dual CFe:
- Faster buffer clearing when recording dual RAW
- Dual recording of high bit rate video
- Simplicity of having one type of media
- Price differential is small vs UHS-ii SD cards
- Very high capacity is available eg 2TB if you are willing to pay for it and prefer 1 card vs multiple or need long video recording times.
- Faster data transfer to PC vs SD card (especially to a USH-i slot and especially for big files eg R5)
- More robust package but are larger/heavier than SD

Benefits of SD card are:
- Ubiquitous availability (at least for slower/smaller capacity cards)
- A lot of PCs have a SD card slot so no need for a CFe or SD card reader. Not so many have a USH-ii SD card slot.
- Lighter but flimsier package
- Less heat generated when used

Of course, there is the USB-C connectivity for tethering but it would be better if the R5ii could be seen (either way) as a external drive besides using LR/DPP/webcam

The R5 will show up as a PTP device in non-tethering mode. Most OSes (macOS, Windows) have built-in support for that. MacOS has ‘Image Capture.app’ where it will show a folder like view of the files on the camera.

Not as nice as being a ‘real’ drive, though.
