Canon Officially Announces the Canon RF 85mm f/1.4 VCM

Idk… but the current line up is so boring!?
I want a lens like the 50-150 2.0 and a lightweight 28-70 2.0…

If weddings are getting better I will switch.
I would love new f2.0 zoom lenses:
- 24-70 f2.0
- 20-50 f2.0
- 35-135 f2.0 would be my dream combo for portraits.
- 50-150 or 70-180 f2.0 would be cool but a bit less useful each time.

Let's hope one will be announced with the R6 MK3.

Almost everyone I personally know who shoots weddings professionally has a 35-150 or 50-150 by this point. I am not a pro but would probably get a sony body soon enough. TBH canon is definitely not creating new lenes fast enough to justify keeping RF closed. Like when RF first came out we had out of spec lenses like 28-70 but now it has turned around and special lenses from other manufacturer are not matched in the canon lineup. Lame.

I honestly thought $1649 for great L-glass was a really good deal, that's why I almost jumped on it. The 1.2 is at around $3000 new, so nearly double.

I would guess the quality of the new VCM is going be on par with the 1.2, possibly slightly less sharp but I don't think sharpness is all that's necessary. I think too sharp can actually be a bad thing. I feel like with some very sharp lenses you actually have to "smooth" it slightly in post or you end up seeing a bunch of pores and stuff that isn't flattering. Maybe that's why there's a DS version of the 1.2, which the main drawback for most is the loss of a stop of light (I believe).

I'm really leaning towards getting the VCM version, I think it's going to be great. And on the R5ii, I don't think IS is going to be a big challenge at such a low focal length. Though, that's coming from someone that did a ton of shooting with the 5Diii with the mp-e 65mm attached. Can't imagine that with an 85mm with high speed and IBIS would be much of a struggle.

$1,649 USA against £1,679 UK. With a better exchange rate and no tariffs, does Canon Japan treat the UK as a cashcow?
I just checked pricing on B&H and with tax, out of the door, it's $1813.90, at least for my area (around Chicago).

Maybe the out-of-the-door pricing for you guys is less? Not sure how it works by you.

I'm really tempted to pre-order it. I know some guys say it seems priced high but it seems reasonable to me, considering all of the great stuff it has. Of course I'm just presuming everything is going to be great!

In the UK (and Europe) the price you see is the price you pay with Tax already added in.

I've just calculated the US and UK prices (inc tax) back to Yen and then calculated the difference in Yen back to $ & £.
This lens costs £335 ($453) more in the UK, where there are no tariffs, than the US, where there are tariffs.

5% federal, plus 0-10% depending on the province. My province (Alberta) doesn't charge sales taxes so I would pay $2100. Someone in New Brunswick would pay $2300.
thx for your respond. I did a google search and I got confused when I read 5% but then sometimes 13% or less, but that explains it. So, living in New Brunswick, a vacation trip to Alberta seemingly pays for itself if the family does their yearly shopping there. :) just kidding of course.

It's a 9000 km drive from St. John New Brunswick to Calgary Alberta, and back again. At 15 km/L and $1.50 per Liter that'll cost $900. Not enough to pay for a 85 VCM but you can get a 85/2 macro for that money.

True, but if one gets a camera and a lens, the wife an iPad, the kids each a new phone you might end up saving :)
I´m just kidding of course :) For me (and probably many europeans) it is just a strange thought that I could technically drive in another part of the country and pay less for identical items. The VAT is set for the entire country in Germany and afaik in most European countries as well.

I'm still in love with my father's vintage FD 100/2.0.
Pity, that it was stolen from my brother years ago...
I have - and sometimes use - a vintage Canon Serenar 100mm f/2.0 for my Leica M39 thread mount Canon rangefinders from the early 1960s. This lens is capable of producing beautiful images with a mix of already quite modern sharpness and a still vintage look... I think I should get a RF-LTM adapter and try it on a digital camera.

Today, Canon has announced the RF 85mm F1.4 VCM, the latest addition to its line of VCM (voice coil motor) autofocus lenses. Canon explained their VCM motors as a simple type of electric motor that utilises magnets surrounding a coil of wire. These types of motors are more efficient at moving heavier objects, and the […]

I hope I didn't miss a post here with the same info: Bryan Carnathan from The Digital Picture has posted a thorough review:
