One of the most hotly patented and contested areas of sensor patent space is how stacked substrates talk to each other. Before Canon released its first stacked sensor in the R3, I had lost count of how many stacked sensor patents dealt with the interconnects between 2 substrates. Usually, the more interconnects between the subtracts

Keep in mind this is just research. this in no way means we are going to see this technology on an R1, or a Canon camera coming out soon.
Maybe not this technology, but if the R1’s rumored 0.8 ms readout speed is true, Canon has done something to achieve a 7-fold faster readout than the R3 and a 5-fold faster readout than other stacked sensors on the market.

Yes I just know in the past, people have run with patent applications thinking they are going to see it in a camera tomorrow. then they got all upset when it didn't happen.
