Canon software will require Login with Canon ID

This is 100% to be able to add subscriptions in the near future. So many companies have done it the same way with similar press releases, then dropped the hammer a few months later. It's so transparent.

They already charge 1$ monthly for DPP on iOS, so it's not like it's a new idea for them.

They'll start cheap enough for it to not matter, and once everyone is okay with it raise prices. Might take a few years until the pricing hurts, it's not going to happen overnight.

In my opinion, this is a BS move. I use some of the different software, but it’s often if I have issues with some other software, so it’s backup. They already charge for certain plugins for DPP. To be honest, Nikon has always charged money for NX, which few people use.

To me, this move is more to keep track of who is using their cameras and software and less about paid features (hopefully). If they invested in a major overhaul of UI and usability, more people might use their software as well as cameras. I’ve used Canon since the A-1 was introduced in 1978, so I’m not going anywhere.

They already have CPS and Canon Club both of which have a product list. Now they want another list on Canon ID.

Yes, I have both, and no all the products I’ve registered on CanonClub are not on Registered on Canon ID.

At least CPS and Canon Club share a common kit list.

How are you logging into CPS and CC? I use my Canon ID for that, so it shouldn't be a 3rd list. Then again, this is Canon doing software....

Login is shared. Kit lists are not, I used to have CPS, when they shifted it to companies only (costed) I swapped to CanonClub. It offered most of the same benefits for zero cost (including discounted repairs). The kit list was identical. When I had a problem registering my R5 Mark II, it was CPS that fixed the problem.

Canon ID list is the stock register a product list and doesn’t currently sync with the CPS list. Canons RCC (repair centre) uses the CPS/CC list.

I use DPP for all my landscape photos as it is the only Raw editor that gives me true Canon color. I don't have an especially fast PC, and have no issues at all with speed or anything else.

Just curious, don't most folks here already have a Canon account if and when they registered any Canon equipment? So all this hand wringing about Canon having your email, they probably already do and it means nothing.
Just curious if you are aware that most raw developers will have a profile that matches the camera colors - for the Adobe slaves like me, in Lightroom you can select Canon presets instead of the default "Adobe Color" and the colors are the same as they are out of DPP and with none of the godawful slowness and UI of having to use DPP. For the free-minded non-Adobe folks, things like DarkTable also can match Canon rendering.

No, the Adobe ‘camera matching’ profiles a
will not deliver the same colours as DPP, you need 3rd party profiles like Colorfidelity for that.
Adobe still turns pale skintones into zombie grey for the 32MP sensors (90D/M6II/R7), which affects my kids, thanks to sunblock and hats :)
LR gets closer to DPP for the R8 and R5II, but using CF profiles still shows a noticeable change toward DPP colours.

I believe I downloaded and installed R5 profiles from canon into Lr. I use them instead of adobe profiles. I wonder how they compare with DPP. Don’t see why there would be a difference if they are from Canon.

As far as I know, Canon doesn't publish camera profiles, only profiles for their printers, inks and papers. Can you share the link/page where you downloaded them from, it would solve the colour issues for a lot of people, pretty much all LR users that shoot RAW on Canon bodies ;)
