Im desperately trying to connect my ST-E3-RT to my canon 1Dx with a Canon SR-N3 cable. I have tried linked mode and the flash simply will not work. Is this possible? Im trying to do this because I'll have to make an hour drive to the nearest camera store to be able to buy a bracket to put my flashes on and put the ST-E3-RT in the hot shoe and id like to avoid it. I have a light bar bracket that I would like to put where the hot shoe it

Hi Brian.
I don't have either of these devices, but I believe the cable is designed to trigger the camera from the flash, not the flash from the camera. The remote port appears to be unidirectional. I think you might get the ST-E3 to trigger with a PC cable and flash shoe, but you would loose all of the E-TTL functionality, the only way to get the head remote would be the E-TTL cable, but then you loose the hot shoe anyway.
Hope this helps.

Cheers Graham.

As Graham says, the SN-R3 is for triggering the camera shutter from the flash, and it's only needed with pre-2012 bodies, your 1D X can be remote-released directly via the hotshoe.

You should be able to connect the camera's PC terminal to the 600's PC port (or hotshoe if you have the PC-to-shoe setup) and it will fire as a 'dumb' flash. The ST-E3-RT cannot be triggered except via a hotshoe connection (direct or via an off-camera shoe cord like the OC-E3).
