Dead beeper :(

Thanks Neuro, I did indeed check the menu for beep function function and I made sure the 5D3 was not in servo mode. I should have mentioned that in my initial post!

I will probably just live without the beep. It wasn't very loud anyway and if there was much background noise I often couldn't hear it. An adjustable volume beep would be nice in some future body.

I suppose I could try resetting all functions and see if that restores the beep, but then I'd have to restore all my personal settings and that seems like too much work. :)

While its possible that the beeper has died, it could also be a symptom of a larger impending failure. As long as you have a backup, you can wait. My hearing is so poor that I can seldom hear it, and if it was louder, it would bother others.

BTW, you can buy one on ebay, if its the speaker itself. You can test by playing back a video to see if you can hear the sound.

I normally set my cameras to silent/silent continuous drive mode as well as turning off the beep. I find it intrusive. The green circle lights up in the viewfinder for focus confirmation anyway so I don't see the need for a beep.

Thanks Mt. Spokane, that was a good idea. I can hear the speaker when playing back video, but it is very low volume. I have the audio recording volume set to AUTO.

Knowing that the speaker is working, I did some more testing, wondering if my own poor hearing is part of the problem.

I tried putting my right ear against the speaker and listening for the focus beep, but no luck. Then I put my left ear against the speaker and I could just barely hear the old familiar chirp. I'm going to assume that my hearing is a big part of the problem here. The beep is pretty high pitched and that's where the hearing loss is.

Thanks for the help, guys!

Yes, my Doctor wants to give me a hearing implant. I have a high powered hearing aid, but a hearing aid still can't fix the issue just by amplifying sounds. Eventually, the loudness saturates the ear, and makes hearing worse, or causes the hearing equivalent of clipping the sounds.

I can make out most voices except in noisy situations, or with people who talk fast. Wiping out my remaining hearing with a implant is a scary step.
