Dpreview: What you need to know about the Canon EOS 7D Mark II

In how many ways and how many times can the same old information be told? That's dpreview for you. Everyone already knew. Meanwhile, their "first impressions" added little to the plate and their first sample shots were of little use. They have really slid downhill over the years.

I call them Digital PReview nowadays. They don't seem to be able to deliver any thorough reviews any longer. When I looked at the link here, I just saw a series of shots from different angles of the camera, and nothing by the camera. Whose "needs" do they cover by such lousy journalism? At least not mine.

They didn't even bother to describe what it feels like in the hands. Put a camera in P-mode, twist it around and snap a few shots of it - could be done by any moron on drugs.

At least they fixed their previous mistake in saying the 7DII has AF point-linked spot metering.

Oh no, it doesn't have it?? I was so pleasantly surprised when I read it was included, it's pretty much what I use for 90'% of my shots... bummer for many, I'm sure...

That's the way the cookie crumbles, if you want the top Google ranks you've got to be quick to post something tagged "xyz review". At least they're doing an better job with these quick previews than youtube do-it-yourself reviewers, and then you can read real reviews elsewhere.

Btw looking at dpr's 7d2 preview at least left me impressed with its af coverage:

Ah, all those "unboxing" videos that makes me want to smash my head into walls, or at least pour a litre of Weissbier into it (the head, not the wall)...

Yes, I've seen a few of those images in the manual, and the presentation of information in the viewfinder looks promising. It'll show with different lights (steady/blinking) if a set of AF points are cross-type focus or regular focus points - makes it easier to select appropriate points. (Instruction manual p 99-103)

Nothing to see here folks... no new news...
Not sure about that - I hadn't seen the mention of it having interchangeable viewfinder screens before this story.

Are you talking about the interchangeable focusing screen? If so its been on canons website since the announcement.... http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_7d_mark_ii#Specifications

I hadn't taken the time to read through all the specs - it's not the most exciting activity...

True... But dpreviews article isn't any more enlightening... Which was my point. Can't wait for some real reviews on this camera though. I suspect that the improvement in color noise will make for very useable images at higher ISO. Other 5d3 was a major improvement over the 5d2 in this respect.

Have you called the police about those people who come to your house and force you to watch the unboxing videos? I would.

There are tons of stuff on youtube that I don't watch. It's easy. ;D

All my DSLR experience has been with a 500D and I got no idea what AF point-linked spot metering is and how it benefits the photographer.

It helps you get a better exposure when tracking a target that is different than the ambient light level - think tracking black bird in bright sky. If the camera spot-meters in the center, you can either guess an exposure compensation (like most of us) or you're forced to use the center af point.

Is it something a software upgrade could enable or are there hardware prerequisites too?

Afaik the metering system/grid has to work with and align to the af points, that's why the 5d3 won't get it even with a 2.0 fw upgrade in 2016. You big guys with 1d cameras feel free to correct me though, I wouldn't know about a good af system anyway with my 6d :-p

Thanks Marsu!

I was tempted to start a thread asking for definitions and practical uses of these new features that are new to bodies other than the 1DX and 5Diii but was wary of a 500th 7Dii post :o

Plus they use the dreaded slide-show method now.
