I've just tried out comparisons on the RF 200-800mm using the images from the thread https://www.canonrumors.com/forum/t...-rf-100-500mm-vs-rf-800mm-on-r7-and-r5.43183/ where I was forced to use DPP4 and DLO etc for comparisons rather than my favourite DxO PL. Here are the extreme centre crops with the DLO first then the DxO PL + lens sharpening module
First, R7 + RF 200-800mm, DxO much sharper and cleaner but oversharpened with aberrations. R5 + RF 200-800mm, DxO much better than DLO and not the obvious oversharpening. I have similar problems with DxO and the RF 100-500mm with the 2xTC being oversharpened.

Where do you have the 'Global' slider at? I have it around +0,17, with the 100-500L and 100-400STM that is, for me, at the edge of being oversharpened. The below screenshot is what I used for todays outing with the R8+100-400STM, the heron has 23m away according to the EXIF:


I wonder if the AA strength influences the oversharpening behaviour, I find the R8 sensor to be much 'sharper' than the R5 and tend to use less or no sharpening in post.

For the bare RF 100-500mm and RF 100-400mm the global slider is set to 0. With the 1.4xTC on the R5 and 100-500, it's set at +1. With the 2xTC it's either at -1 or off and I use Topaz for sharpening as DxO oversharpens. Lower Mpx always appears sharper, all things being equal, as the larger pixels cause sharper transitions by losing resolution.

It’s standalone, but it’s just an editor, if you’re using LR as a DAM, PL would not replace it.
DxO has a predictable cadence for discounts, it helps to wait for Black Friday season.

I have not run across that with DSO across many versions (I think I started with v4 of the predecessor to PL, Optics Pro, which went up to v10 or v11, and with P they restarted the numbering).

I suppose it depends on how you define necessary. The only thing that makes a DxO version update necessary is if you buy a new camera. When new lens modules are released, they work on all of the camera bodies supported by whatever version of PL you are running.

Black Friday is definitely the time to buy. I updated to PL7 this past one, not because any of the features were particularly attractive, but because I am pretty sure I will purchase an R1 when it comes out, and the current version of PL will be required to support that as a newly released camera body.

The significance of '-1 or off' didn't register to me until yesterday. I had assumed that the slider going from -3 to +3 meant it would work just like sharpness slider that allow negative values in competing products: negative value means blurring, zero means off and positive values mean actual sharpening. DxO disagrees with that and uses the following (R8 + 100-500L profile): -3 = off, anything between -3 and +3 will give you sharpening.

For this specific image, person at 82m away, lens zoomed to 114mm the most pleasing, to me, value for lens sharpening was -0.5. So thank you for reminding me that Dxo marches to their own drum
