Re: Back in Stock: EOS 5D Mark IV & EOS 6D Mark II Bundle Deals at B&H Photo

The Canon 5D is holding is a fairly good deal but it is packaged with stuff like a battery grip and a pixma printer that I really don't want but could probably unload on Craigslist. The 6D2 is a "dog", as i predicted after all the negative reviews came out that this camera would be heavily discounted by the Holiday season. The five year old 6D is still holding its price at B&H, its going for a few hundred bucks less than the Mark 2. The market is punishing Canon for putting out such a substandard product as the 6Dmk2, which has less dynamic range than Canon's top cropped sensor on the 80D.

I don't think Canon intended to sell the 6DII at launch price for long. Look at their prior experience with the 35 f/2 IS, 24 f/2.8 IS, 28 f/2.8 IS and 24-70 f/4 IS. All those lenses came out at very high prices, and people were left scratching their heads as to their value. Then the prices were reduced and those lenses found their niche. Canon is maximizing its profits by selling at a variable price (price discrimination). The people willing to pay the most will pay the most. Others will wait until the price drops and the cost equals their marginal benefit. The effect is there also with higher end gear (5DIV, 100-400 II, etc.) but the discount ratio is less.

The 6D line is designed to make a profit even at a steep "discount" from launch price, which is what the 6D pricing shows. No one produces a product at a loss for long. Canon typically does not offer a feature set that is superior to it's competitors in every metric, but it does know how to make money. Part of that is engineering for low cost of production and part of that is getting the maximum price from its customers even if it charges different sets of customers different prices.

Of course, Canon stated that sales of the 6DII were up in 3Q, and were better than expected. But no doubt, experts like you know far more about camera sales than Canon. ::)

Re: Back in Stock: EOS 5D Mark IV & EOS 6D Mark II Bundle Deals at B&H Photo

I was conflicted about the 6D Mark II (because of the lack of improvement in dynamic range) but decided to bite on this great bundle deal. I've owned my 6D for 4 years and it's been an awesome camera but I'm really looking forward to the new features. I'm recovering from a serious knee injury so the flippy LCD screen is going to be very valuable to me. The new ability to autofocus with my TC/400mm lens combo is also going to be fantastic now along with the bump in resolution for more freedom in cropping wildlife photos. Yes I would have liked the autofocus points spread out more but still the autofocus capabilities of the Mark II are much improved over the 6D. I also really like that Canon moved the remote shutter port to the front of the body so that it no longer interferes with my L-bracket. I also wanted the smaller size and weight of the 6D Mark II vs the 5D Mark IV. I would never have bought a battery grip (included in the bundle along with an extra Canon battery) but now I'm seeing the possibilities with it in terms of getting some great star track series and other night shoot uses. By the time I sell my 6D this will end up being a very inexpensive upgrade indeed. This new body will be my placeholder until Canon introduces what I hope will be a worthy full frame mirrorless competitor to Sony.

There are some really good prices, better than I expected this year. However, I'm set for 3+ years with my new cameras.

They're great prices, I'm glad Canon listened to retailers and killed off the grey market with some real deals, not $100 savings on $3500 camera bodies.

I'm enjoying my 6D Mark II, but I do wish I paid this price instead of launch price. :)

Haha, same here. But that's what one gets buying the latest greatest! ;)

I try to soothe the wounds a bit by rationalizing that although I would have saved a good chunk of change on the purchase of the mark II today, I would have also taken a good hit on the resale of the mark I today versus when I sold this spring.
