Since One Year I am now researching and learning about DSLRs. Now I finally figured out, that the EOS 7D is my preferred body, that will allow me to do pretty everything that I want to try out. There's been a price drop this year and so I now decided to buy this camera for Christmas.

Until I today read about the CES in january and that canon plans to introduce some new models. I also heard about some 8D and 7D Mark II rumors. Will they be relevant for the CES?

Would it be better to wait and see what happens, or buy the 7D as planned? I would buy the 7D anyways because a Mark II or 8D would be more pricy I think. So the question for me is - will there be another price drop in January?

Thanks
Daniel

If you're worried about a newer model succeeding the 7D, like a 7D mk2, there's no chance of that happening until the end of next year, same with a 5D mk3, and there probably won't be any new models for at least a year either.

As for price, I'm not so sure where that's going, everything will always get gradually cheaper, some parts of the world are dropping prices now trying to encourage xmas sales, some parts of the world drop prices a lot more after xmas for stock-take sales.
(Given how many photos I take on average, if you wait until next year instead of getting it now, that's probably 1-2000 shots you're not taking until then...)

I just bought my 7D from Canon about 2 months ago for $1550.00 (body only). My 40D was ripped off and my insurance paid (in part) for my new camera. I love it so far! In the 2+ years the 7D has been out, it hasn't dropped much at all in price, with the exception of a promotion (rebate) once and a while. The rebels and XXD lines have also maintained a pretty steady pricing so I would imagine that any new camera (7D mkII or 5D mkIII) would also hold true price-wise.

Unless you NEED (and at this point, the specs of any future camera are purely speculative and wishful thinking) a new, unavailable camera, I would say, buy what best suits your needs NOW and let the chips fall where they may with any new technology as far as cameras go. Look at the 1D X.... 18MP??? I bet allot of Canon guys were expecting a super-high MP full frame pro camera. Canon said "no" and went the other direction. Sure, it sports a fantastic frame rate, but I think it put a damper on allot of MP hungry customers. Will Nikon follow? Who knows... At an suspected price of 6 grand plus, I sure hope Canon made the best decision. (personally, I believe that good glass out weighs camera body/MP) Just my 2 cents.

The way I look on it is that if you have figured out the 7D is for you and the price has dropped you should get it. Eventually a newer model 7DmkII will come out with better specs and a bigger price to justify the better performance, but a couple of years after that a 7DIII will come out which will be even better and so on and so forth for eternity...

If it's what you want/need now, get it.

Thanks to everybody for your assessment.

I bought the 7D on friday and I am totally happy that I did it. The price was very good and the kit I bought (with the Canon 18-135mm f/3-5-5,6) is a great combo for me to start. As a Beginner, I already took some really nice photos over the weekend.

Have a look at my photoblog, if you like.

Next projects are testing video and timelapse. I am thrilled :)

Daniel,

I had been looking at the 7d and the 60d for a few months now. I have a XSI that I've had for a couple of years, and wanted something better that also took video. I bought my 7d on Friday night too. Same combination - the 18-35mm lens too!

I wholeheartedly agree with the advice on the forum with respect to waiting. Sometimes it can seem like you wait forever as there is always something better coming out. I only got my camera on Monday night, but I've spent some time playing with it, and have been very impressed so far.

I liked the pictures on your photoblog - are those plain images or did you process them in Photoshop or something like that?

Congratulations again!

Hi glzq,

The second one (Dark Times Ahead) was an HDR-Test. The others got a basic color correction in Aperture. I must admit, that they were some kind of lucky-shots, as I am still experimenting. Next one will be a first test-movie. Should be posted today, if I find the time. HD-Exporting out of Final Cut takes ages on my Mac.

I should post a few meta data as well, so it gets clearer.

Thanks

Just remember that the 7D has the same guts as the Rebel T2i. Both have DIGIC IV, which is quickly becoming old technology.

I know it is tempting but I was able to hold off the purchase of (7D/5D II) by purchasing (2) CANON EOS 1V-HS---- CANON LAST PROFESSIONAL film camera. You can buy it for $650 in Ex condition. I am now patiently waiting for the 5D MARK III ever since I got the 1V-HS. Heck, I could even wait until 2013!!-- Why? It is because the 1V-HS is a terrific 35mm SLR camera.-- Combined with professional grade film from KODAK and FUJI, there is no rush to upgrade my T2i. Digital is amazing but I believe that there should always be room for FILM. DIGITAL + FILM workflow ( plus L lenses =D) = amazing photos

Cheers!
