I was planning a trip to yellowstone national park and curious if anyone had advice on flying with either my 600f4 or 400f2.8. They are expensive to be lost in luggage, but perhaps too large for carry on. And which of the two should I bring. I really am hoping for some bald eagle sightings, but if it's not likely I'd rather have my 400 since it is more hand holdable.

It shouldn't be a problem flying with a 600 f/4 as carry on. You may have to pay extra depending on airline baggage fees. Are you flying WestJet? It would be good to contact them.

I fly about four times a month, many airlines have started to actually weigh hand luggage in the hope it is too heavy and you have to pay to check it. Which airline are you using?
Avoid, Southwest, Spirit, AirTran and AA from many destinations, plus any of the multitude of "budget" airlines, total ticket price to actually travel is often way above regular scheduled airlines.

What you don't want to happen is you get stuck on a small regional sized plane that has limited overhead baggage space because then you'll have to gate check your bag and who knows what can happen to it. You're totally at the mercy of the baggage handlers then. Will they drop it, toss it, lose it....makes me nervous when I'm out of control of my camera bag.

I haul my 400 2.8 IS in an ugly beat up artist's rolling bag. It has quite nice ball bearing wheels and does not mind having a heavy camera bag on top of it. It goes into over head luggage compartments with no trouble in most med to large airlines. The lens has it's hood on reversed, leather lens cap on that and then is embedded in soft T-shirts and other clothing.
On shorter commuter flights if I'm forced to check it (Usually outside the plane), I pull the 400 and hand carry it.
I recently picked up a mildly used lowepro 600 lenstrekker for about $80. It's cool, but this may have been a better idea when I was less than 40. I think I need the wheels now and to keep things off my back.

Without the hood, either lens will fit in a Storm im2500 hard case, and if there's even a remote chance you'll have to check your gear, you should pack it in a hard case. Normally when I fly, I pack the gear in a Lowepro photo backpack (Lowepro Flipside 300 or 400AW, a DSLR Video Fastpack 250, or a Toploader Pro and Lens Cases), and then the bag(s) go in the Storm im2500. For the 600 II (I haven't flown with it yet), I'd pack that in the hard case and put the hood in a backpack or checked luggage.

I've had SAS actually weigh my carry-on (they only allow 8kgs) and I've seen KLM do the same (but they allow 12kgs).Pixel said:
