Internal test version no doubt as a few other noted. Depending on whether you can be bothered and how quickly you need to get back to using it:
Have a hunt around through the menus and see if you can find anything interesting / different and share.
I'm not sure if the Magic Lantern team have a 'turnkey' firmware downloader for the 7D or not but they might be interested in examining what is different.
It's actually my dad's camera. I use a set of 5D3's for work so It doesn't really affect me as much. Maybe I'll try reaching out to the magic lantern folks. thanks for the reply! Aloha!
When I took my 1dx to my CPS contact, he installed the "maintenance firmware" and after he did all what he wanted to do, he just re-installed the latest firmware on top.
Figure out how to activate the 'dead pixel (re)mapping' function.
Then figure out how to get the firmware off.
then distribute it around the world.
I can't believe my 5 year old 8mp P&S will let you re-map dead pixels, but my 7D has to be sent in for service.
Any way to provide that for free would be a service to the world.
It occasionally happens that the technician did not restore the production firmware. Just download the latest firmware and install it, or send it back to Canon. They will arrange for shipping both ways.
