Help with Canon 6D Purchase

I want to purchase the Canon 6d. I currently own a T3i and I want to keep it as a secondary camera. I have the following lenses; the kit lens that came with the T3 (I never use), a Canon 50mm f/1.4, a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 and a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8. I don’t think the 17-50mm is compatible with the 6d, but do you think I can get by with the 50mm and 70-200mm? Instead of buying the 6d with the 24-105mm f/4L, would it make better since to buy the body only and later buy the Tamron 24-70 with VC? What would you do?

I'm about to purchase the 6D myself and I've been researching the kit lens as well. Here's the conclusion I've come to.

Buy the kit. The body is between 1800 and 2000. The kit is between 2300 and 2500. The 24-105L is around a grand retail. Basically you are getting an L lens with a very useful range and IS for 50% off. I have a T2i which is basically a T3i without the flip screen. If you put the 24-105L on the 6D and the 70-200 on the T3i you have a two camera system that covers all focal lengths from 24 to 320 and have about the same DOF wide open.

I would consider unloading the 17-50 as well as the kit lens and getting the 17-40L. You'll be able to get wider on the 6D and the 17-40 will largely function the same as the 17-50 on the T3i. Plus it has a cool red ring. All 3 of your zooms (the 17-40, 24-105, and 70-200) would have 77mm filter threads. That would make life easy.

Buy the 24-105 kit lens no matter what, and if you don't want it sell it and make $400. I've done that 5x+ times.

Depending on the price of the 6D + 24-105 kit, it might make sense to buy the kit now and sell the 24-105 later for a profit. Right now, the difference between the kit and the body only is 550. Used 24-105s go for a bit more than that, so you should be able to turn a profit when you want to trade in the 24-105 for a 24-70 VC.

Or you can get the kit now, sell the 24-105 and your Sigma 17-50 and get the 24-70 VC. It's more economical to get ultrawide zooms for crop cameras, and a Tokina 11-16 or a Sigma 8-16 or a Canon 10-22 will be less expensive than a 16-35 II.

i'd personally buy the 6D and 24-105 kit and sell the 17-50
since the 24-105 is always a bargain when bought as a kit
edit also keep the T3i kit lens as it will make it easier to sell later if you decide to sell that body down the track

Hi wickibwombat, that sounds like a great idea, but since I'm keeping the T3i, I think it would be worth more to me than what I can sell it for.... Just boils down to more yards to mow.....

I'm almost on the same boat as yours. I'm still saving for 6D + kit. I find that having an all-around lens is a must and is a bargain when bought with 6D. You can always sell it for profit if you find yourself restricted with F4 and needs F2.8. High ISO performance of 6D might make F4 quite liveable.

+1 on replacing the Sigma 17-50 with a Canon 17-40L (or Samyang 14mm if you're on budget and really needs something wider) . This can make your lens lineup more versatile. Keep your 18-55 kit lens. Even if you don't plan to sell your T3I, it'll be a good expendable cheap lens for those times you can't bring your L.

We have found the F4 quite liveable, even in low light venues such as weddings and on a 5D2.

A couple examples from the 5d2 and 24-105 combo shot last year. I now have a 5d3, but am still using the 24-105, though I have since added some additional lenses. I think it is worthwhile for you to get the 6D kit, and may buy a 6D for myself in future as backup
