The New Rebel

Here’s a picture of the new Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D.

The lens on the camera is not the new rumoured 18-135 IS with a silent AF motor. Below that is a picture with the new EF-S 18-135 IS STM (silent motor).

There are no confirmed specs at this time, we expect those soon.

Re: Here's the Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D

Can anyone make out if there's a headphone port icon on the side? I tried zooming into the image, but can't tell. If it has audio monitoring via a headphone jack, this camera might be worth the upgrade from my T3i

Re: Here's the Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D

Can't remember the kid's magazine where you spot the differences, but I notice:

On the T4i...

1. No microphone on the front.
2. Front buttons don't look as recessed (see flash/DOF buttons).
3. Function dial has a different texture--no lock, great!
4. Button arrangement around said dial looks different.
5. Side covers look the same to me, front is remote control and mic, rear is A/V out and HDMI mini out.
6. Overall a more chiseled look...less rounded off.
7. Something is going on in front of the hot shoe...left and right...stereo mic perhaps?

Edit: It's "Highlights," and you don't compare two pictures, you have to find hidden items in a sketch.

Doesn't look like it. I can see a timer input and mic input and then on the other flap its HDMI and something else....possibly headphones there....

Pretty much identical to the 600D in terms of flaps on the side... http://a.img-dpreview.com/news/1102/canon/600d/EOS-600D-FSL-w-EF-S-18-135mm-IS.jpg

EF-S 18-135 IS STM

The new 18-135 looks like a re-design and not just a mkII version with a motor overhaul. From the picture it looks a bit more compact than the old lens, unless my imagination is just working overtime. The silver ring has definitely has moved from the middle to near the front of the lens. Better optically, maybe? Could be a more interesting lens than I'd thought...

Wouldn't be so sure about that...it just might be more recessed than the previous locks, and thus harder to see. Seeing as they've included the lock in everything lately, I'd imagine it will still be there.

STM vs USM? What's the technical difference? Other than that STM is, I assume, worse somehow.

STM is a stepping AF motor. If you want to see how it works, its already used on the Nikon 1
And if we're going by previous rumors, the point of STM is that its silent (I'd assumed "S" in it). So, it may or may not be better than USM in terms of actual focus, but for video purposes, they key is that it won't make noise. That's in theory, of course

Re: Here's the Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D & EF-S 18-135 IS STM

What's going on Craig?

Where's the CR?

The new 18-135, do we have any anticipated specs (meaning is it a crappy kit lens, a high quality EF-S lens, or a sub-L 15-85 quality lens that only got boned because it's APS-C)?

Hook us up brother!

If the T4i is good enough, the 60D/7D should be more absurdly out of spec that we get an upgrade . . . or we languish in a void to the specialty market . . . whatever works for Canon.
