Hotshoe cover for 5D3?

I've recently come across some Nikon hotshoe covers. I actually might use something like that, but not to protect the hotshoe. I'd use it to protect all the fabric the hotshoe grates against -- the inside of bags, camera straps while packed in the bag, various edges/seams of clothing while I carry/draw via BlackRapid, etc.

Has anyone tried the Nikon BS-3 on a Canon hotshoe? I saw this link for older BS-2 on the 5D3:

http://brightbit.blogspot.com/2012/12/nikon-hot-shoe-protection-caps-on-canon.html

It fits but seems to be propped up pretty high and still have some underlying edges that could catch on fabric. Was hoping the BS-3 might sit down a bit better.

Hi A.
I use the generic equivalent of the BS-1 on all my camera hotshoes, for the very same reason, protect the lining of my bags and other fabrics. On some of the cameras the moulding around the hot shoe prevents the cover going right back so you need to chamfer the edge slightly with a file to suit, I looked at various versions and decided on the simplest looking option as it looks the cleanest in use.

Photos in order, taken with iPhone without flash (because the stupid thing refocuses with flash and never hits focus) so they are high iso and fuzzy!

EOS 7D.
Unmodified cover.
Modified cover.
Cover installed.

Cheers, Graham.

Clever / shady marketing at work here:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/NEW-BS-2-Hot-Shoe-tutup-penutup-untuk-for-canon-5D-6D-450D-60D-600D/32631430698.html --> claims "for canon 5D 6D 450D 60D 600D" and shows what appears to be a Rebel with the BS-2.

http://www.photoloving.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=244 --> "Compatible with Canon SLR cameras and other ISO518 hot-shoe design standard SLR camera" and shows was appears to be a 7-series rig with the BS-2.

The fit looks budget at best, even on the Nikons it was designed for.

Would love to see a BS-3 in the same application, but I'm not sure how the D500/D850/D5 hotshoe (that it is compatible with) differs. Obv the internal bracket profile is consistent for using Nikon speedlites, but how thick that bracketing is and the surrounding topography of the top cap may have changed. Does anyone know?

Thanks for the pics Valvevbounce, but I've seen the BS-1 and that's a nonstarter for me. It's low profile, sure, but the leading edge could still catch something.

For me at least, the idea is to create an all-sides bumper that just takes the metal out of the picture contact-wise. I really just want a (US coin) quarter-sized circle in the shape of a shallow dome with a magnet on it, the more I think about it.

Checks his old Rebel lying around = magnet works like a charm. Might be the time to buy some Sugru and just DIY this thing. Would cost more than the BS-3 would, however. ::)

Why would you have different versions for Eos camera's, aren't the hotshoes all the same?

I would have thought so. My 600EX-RT flashes fit and work perfectly on my 1D X and my EOS M6. But...the M6 ships from Canon with a hotshoe cover – I just checked and that hotshoe cover does not fit into the hotshoe on the 1D X.

Hi Zim.
I’m not 100% certain and I cannot check right now but I think the unmodified BS-1 cover will fit the 300D and 20D properly but I think the 40D needs a modified cover as do the 7D, 7DII and 1DsIII so there are minor differences in the plastic mouldings surrounding the shoe, I think the (Canon) shoes are basically all the same standard size.

Cheers, Graham.

Already tried for other applications, but haven't considered here. The gaffer comes off clean from the main body material, but you must keep it away from any of the handgrip material.

The only question would be if it gunks the contacts or leaves residue. Will try and report back.

Hi pwp.
Why bother? Because we have spent a lot of money on a nice bag(s) to transport our gear when we go out to take our photos and we would like to have nice bags to put them in to go out taking photos next year and the year after! :)
Plus this is a fish I can fry, I can’t fry dump and kimmy! Can’t even bang their stupid heads together!  ;D ;D

Cheers, Graham.

Mind snapping a picture for me of this one in place? Do the metal edges of the hotshoe bracket closest your your eye stick out past the hotshoe cover?

Again, my issue is not protecting the hotshoe nearly as much as protecting my clothing and bags.

Thx

Cell phone pic. The shoe sticks out about 0.75mm., But with the way the top is domed most of the abrasive edge is protected and you feel only a tiny edge when you run your finger across it.. For me, this will do a lot to protect my bag.
