How do you carry your 500mm?

I am looking at the 500mm mkii because I loved the mki when I rented it but I want to hand hold it. I currently use a 100-400 and a Think Tank holster case which lets me hike and have the hood attached for quick access to the lens but good protection. What does everyone use? Most options seem to only work with the hood reversed.

Thanks!

I use the Tamrac Expedition 8X, it fits in it nicely. (Hood Reversed of course)
I also have a Lowepro Pro Trekker 400 AW

In my eyes both are about equal. Either would work.

Since you rented a 500mm I you know there is no comparison with how you carry the 100-400mm.

The best improvement from the version I to the version II 500mm is the IS and the loss of weight. It is much easier to handhold.

Agreed I was able to hand hold the mki but the 1.5 lbs, two stops of IS are very appealing. Don't want to be bogged down by a tripod.

Was thinking of this one with the backpack accessory straps. It will fit with hood attached not reversed and camera

Padding is much more robust on that. Do you constantly flip the hood and put it back in the bag to carry it?

Yes, you have to attach the hood every time.

Usually only a nuisance at the start. Most of what I do I never put it back up once out.

Looking at the bag you linked I would be interested in how sturdy and how much padding it has.
Also I have concerns about leaving the hood on during transport. When the hood is on it feels like a weak link, I am not sure how well it would hold up attached in rough transport. The one review at B&W mentioned movement inside the bag, I would want the lens strapped down and secure. It would look interesting in certain situations.

Agreed. The interesting thing is the bag length is adjustable. You could shorten it and reverse the hood during transport. A trip to B&H may be in order.

Was also looking at the bataflae 32L.
