How excited are you about the new 7D II?

IMO we will see more 'excitement' when the camera gets in the hands of common, ordinary users that post reviews on YouTube. I do both stills and video so reading the last few days about both capabilities has increased my interest. I like the fact that it can do clean HDMI out, it is rated at 200K shutter count, it seems good at high ISOs, that AF is improved, and things like that. These things make it more versatile for me out in the field. I have 1Ds and 5Ds, but when it comes to going on site lean and mean for taking bunches of shots quick or some video, I use a 650D. It is inexpensive, light, and versatile, and it does a great job with the CP I have loaded. So I could see doing similar things with the 7DII, which would be even more robust and rugged. I could also use the 7DII for time lapse given that the shutter count is rated high. In short, I could see me shooting the heck out of it. But I will wait until I am able to get more insights into what people think of it.

2014 and brand new semi pro camera released with recycled (2006?) sensor design.
Just think what will happen to the value of 7Dll in another 5 years cycle just next spring when Sony is planning to announce whole new generation of sensors...

Perfect! Just coming in from a shoot and seeing this made my day....
Waiting on the raw files also. But, .5 stop better ISO will be a great camera for me.
I am really hoping when the RAW's start coming in it won't disappoint.
Every thing I had hoped for, and wanted in a birding camera!
1.4x t.c. on the 300 II with this AF will be my new BIF tool , WOW.
Pick up a 2.0x t.c. and my 500 II will be my new shore bird shooter.
Absolutely perfect for me. :)

As a 1D X owner investor, it makes me less excited to see 90% of my camera for less than 1/3 the price, but as a Canon shooter, I think the camera looks amazing. I also think it may be time to give up on wildlife and sports shooting now as the masses now have access to an amazingly capable camera ;)

Yep, for me to buy another 1.6x crop camera, it will need to have great low iso ability. Matching my 5DIII...if not it's a waste of a great camera casing.
That's what I'm waiting to see, too. If it comes close to the 5DIII, it might find a place in my bag.

I read on Canon's website that the dual pixel AF doesn't work in 1080 60p, can someone confirm that?

"The EOS 7D Mark II delivers refined and detailed EOS movie image quality with
Full HD 60p (59.94 fps NTSC), and even 50.00 fps (PAL), recording at ISO values up to
16000 (Dual Pixel CMOS AF is not available when shooting at 60p). At these frame
rates, even a fast-moving subject looks looks smooth in HD."

Only at 1080 60p while using 16000 iso? Or not at all functional in 1080 60p?

7D Mkii looks to be one fine piece of kit!...

As a current owner of a 7D and the 5d3 I appreciate both of their different functional placements in the EOS lineup...

...The 7D2 is targeted clearly at the sports / wildlife market so it needs to do the things that that segment needs really well!....

...Oh...and BTW .... the price is approx. the same as the release price of my 7D in 2009.

Yes.

One thing about Canon, they seem very good at targeting their releases to specific audiences. The 5DIII was clearly targeted to wedding and event shooters (still a fine camera for everyone else, but was instantly a 'must have" for that segment.)

Now comes the 7D II and it is obviously targeted to action, sports, bird and wildlife photographers. It will be a great APS-C camera for everyone else, but they focused it on a specific market. Those wanting low ISO performance may be disappointed, but this was never intended to be the camera for them.

It looks like Canon tried to hit a sweet spot between resolution, higher ISO performance and 1.6 reach. Good move on their part.

Overall, I'm pretty excited by this camera, not just because of what it is, but because of what it says about Canon. Despite the complainers, Canon is clearly the best at figuring out what its customers want and targeting its products to those needs. I suspect this will be a great seller for Canon.

Excited? - Mostly :)
New 65-point AF system, 10fps, deep memory buffer for RAW series, f/8 AF, DPAF, excellent build, ergonomics and view finder.
Disappointed? - Yes, a bit.
It seems like Canon gave up on video competition - no 4K, no focus peaking, no zebra (maybe magic lantern will fix that), no vari-angle touch screen. Instead, they are only now catching up with Sony's 1080@60p from 2010.
I'm afraid that we are going to see the same 20mp 70D sensor in all upcoming APS-C bodies for the next 3 years, like it was with the old 18mp.
Mixed memory card type slots (SD+CF) make little sense to me and I'd rather take WiFi and no GPS. That's just me, not a deal breaker. After all, the SD slot may be used for Eye-Fi card.

Built-in RT (+WiFi) module would have been nice :).

It will be interesting to see how ML works with it. But we do know that the 7DII does support external recording of HDMI. I use the Atomos for peaking and zebra. But then that is another $1K or so (with storage). Thanks for your thoughts.

I am a videographer/Editor and have been patiently waiting for the Mark II and it's probably not surprising I was very disappointed. I had to read and watch all the Photokina release info and videos twice because I was so underwhelmed I couldn't believe it.

I'll be keeping a close eye on that new Samsung. If it delivers what they boasted at Photokina it's going to ROCK the videography side of things...

I am very excited. I want a camera for action, birds, and backcountry camping trips. This camera seems to be designed for that....

As said repeatedly in the past, who cares what the DR or pixel count is of an out of focus picture. This new AF system appears to rock!
