What do you consider a fair price to sell off your used 5D2 once the 5D3 is available? Condition is always a factor so lets assume for a moment that your 5D2 was purchased this month and it is nearly flawless with less than 10k shutter actuations.

I think a safe bet is the 5D3 will be announced at photokina (hope I spelled that right) and availability is in October/November. This will put your 5D2 at a few months shy of 1 year old. So, what is a fair price: $1500?, $1700, $1800????

Im asking for a consensus to help in figuring out the difference ($2500-x) with x obviously representing used price. This will help in planning how much cash I need to save up? I already have 1K appropriated for the 5D3 and crossing my fingers the 5D2 will cover the difference.

Funny, I just had this exact conversation with a friend last night. Considering the 5D2 is going for $1,999 right now on B&H and Adorama with some bundled toys (CF card, camera bag, etc.), we're guessing it will settle into the low $2ks after Christmas (and once an official MKIII announcement is made). Probably $2,100-ish retail.

Once 5D3 hits and MKII is officially discontinued, we came up with $1,500 for a 5D2 on the used market (in good condition). However, this will also depend on the retail price of the 5D3. If the 5D3 pushes into the mid-$3ks, a higher price for used mkII's can be sustained. As time goes on and the 5D3 becomes more common place, the used 5D2 value will obviously be diminished.

@justsomedude: damn, if canon does pull a fast one and command mid-3k for the mk3 then lets all hope the update includes more than a new sensor and updated body design (ergonomics) and gives us 100% VF, 6fps, and better weathersealing! Otherwise, simply charging more for the excuse of inflation is just bull!

Canon sells refurbished 5DIIs for $2,000. Most refurbished models are nearly as good as or better than new (since they've been given a thorough going-over by Canon) and come with a limited warranty.

When they offer a discount the bodies sell for $1,700 (if you can score one). Personally, I would not pay more than $1,500 for a used body from an individual (no warranty, no cleaning and calibrating, etc.) I would expect the price to drop once a new model comes out. CanonPriceWatch did a blog post several months back that essentially said that Canon lenses outperform the stock market, but bodies are poor investments.

That said, I've watched a lot of used products sell on eBay for outlandish prices. So I guess, if you can find a gullible buyer, you might get more for it. But, for planning purposes, I wouldn't count on it.

You will have to price it at the then going rate for used ones, and there is no way to know. What I've seen in the past, is that the price of a new model jumps up above the price of the old model, and used prices start to climb once the new model is readily available.

Right now, with new bodies for $2,000 and used ones selling for 1600-1700, its likely that they will sell in that range or higher once the new ones are in stock.

However, if new ones jump to $4500, the value of the old ones will rise if they are no longer available new.

The original 5D dropped sharply in price before the MK II was announced, but then prices rose sharply after the 5D was in stock.
