Ugh, I screwed up. I sold Canon 400mm f/5.6 lens via the Fred Miranda forums. Right before packaging up the lens, I found the original case stuffed under my desk. I pulled it out, popped in the lens and shipped it off.

The big mistake was not looking all the way into the lens case. It turns out there was a small mouse in there (dunno if it was alive or not at the time, I didn't hear any scurrying around). My second mistake was forgetting the lens cover. Those two lapses in judgement resulted in the buyer getting my nearly pristine lens in this condition.

The buyer wants to try and clean it, see if it's salvageable. If he keeps it, I'm offering a nice discount. Otherwise I'll refund it and have Canon service it before I sell it again.

All I can say is, he's a brave man for wanting to try and clean it himself. I would've had a heart attack if I opened up a new lens and found it looking like this.

You shipped the lens with a rat? Epic.

I'm surprised that the buyer took that well and didn't decide to press charges.

He seemed to take it better than I would. Of course, all I have to go by is his reaction in the emails. I can only imagine what his initial reaction was when he pulled it out of the case.

On further investigation, it appears to have been some kind of caterpillar that was in the case, rather than a mouse. It's still pretty gross, but not as bad as a rodent may have been. Also, the lens cleaned up quite nicely, although some of the lens coatings may have come off during the cleaning process.
