I've occasionally had problems with new releases not being 100% up to par.
I'm also under the impression that it takes 6 months for refurbs to become available.

I don't want to be playing camera tag with a newly released body.
Is there another way to get one that has been pre-examined before the purchase?

You could go to a camera store and spend an hour annoying the clerk while you check every detail out...assuming you have a store anywhere near where you live. I'm 4+ hours from the nearest store. Also, you could buy one off eBay or Craigslist from someone who bought but then decided to sell it a short time later.

Beyond that, I don't think there's any other way to do it

Or you can recognize that most copies of new cameras are just fine. It is just that the bad copies get more internet forum exposure. This sampling error can give potential buyers the wrong impression.

Remember that most photographers do not visit internet forums
and that most people who buy cameras do not write posts indicating that they have no problems.

Buy used and not have a warranty...don't think so!

Is there a list of quick checks to verify that a new body is up to snuff in all departments
without spending a week or so shooting various stuff?

You can't have it both ways at least not "before the purchase" as you said in your fist post.

If there's a systematic issue, there will be a recall. If there's a firmware bug, there will be an update.

Most shops have a return window based on time but also shutter count (IIRC, B&H is <200 clicks), thorough testing would put you over that (e.g., FoCal's multipoint AF test which will take at least 61 of your quota).

Rent one, try it out and if it's ok buy that one.
