Intermittent Button Function on 1DX

My 1DX gets plenty of use in and around sand and saltwater so likely due for a cleaning anyway.

That said my camera today started to not allow me to use the buttons under the LCD or above (playback, erase, menu, info) but only after taking one shot then using any of them.

Essentially if I turn it off or pull the batter it resets and I get one button usage until I fire the shutter again.

Anyone had this issue?

I have CPS and live 45mins to an hour from the NJ Canon repair center so I'll likely be making a drive this week.

Occasionally, switches get dirty or corroded contacts. It might be possible to clean them, some users have done this. No camera is sealed perfectly, sealing is very difficult, hermetic sealing is extremely difficult and totally impractical for a camera.

Canon will replace the switches, circuit board and all. You may be able to purchase the part and do it yourself, but Canon will likely replace seals as well. Its not a common complaint with the 1D X, but happens.

Well nearly $750 later I should be getting my camera back tomorrow.

Initial estimates were for the back cover assembly. Came out to $450 with my CPS discount. Got the updated estimate for Back Cover Assm, Front Cover Assm, and Top Cover Assm. Add in the major labor charge and now I'm up to $750.

Little annoyed given that their reasoning is the camera was damaged by "liquid". Yes I work in a often wet environment but never subject the camera to any sort of dunking or submersion. I'd think the best weather sealed camera they make could handle some salt spray here and there?

Oh well, already paid for the repair and guess its just time to put it back to work right away.

Hi surfer.
I guess it can handle a little salt spray here, but not there, never there, aargghh. ;D
Seriously of all the things I worry about getting on a camera, salt spray would be at the top, just above sticky drinks, and just below acid spray! As I'm not knowingly around acid spray it tops my list. Plus we all know that unless it has an I.P. rating (above 44 or is it 54) it is not water resistant don't we.
Good to know you have the camera fixed.

Cheers, Graham.

Some years ago got volcanic ash in the shutter button assembly of an old body (maybe 50d?) that required replacement of the assembly. Ironically, I spent the last week along the shoreline with 5Diii and a variety of lenses. Plenty of salt spray despite my best efforts. I did my best with damp towel to wipe everything down but I now that the "damage" may take a while too manifest. Hope no harm.....

Glad you got yours fixed.

No complaints from Canon customer service that is for sure to say the least. I am lucky enough to pick up and drop off at the NJ repair site and have always been treated well.

I think I just had too high of expectations for the weather sealing. That said the camera is a few years old. Not to mention much of my shooting occurs in a water housing in the surf (never once had any leaks or failures). Camera is always in, or around salt water, even for portrait and wedding jobs. Inevitable cost of the job I guess.
