So many of you have great ideas and suggestions for software and firmware upgrades to improve the Canon products. It seems as though everyone is sharing/ranting/griping here but is anyone submitting their thoughts to Canon? This rant and rave reminds of me of when people complain or talk about someone behind their backs. The communication never gets to the culprit and so they keep doing what they are doing and the complainer keeps complaining. An endless loop.

I do hope some of you or most of you send these excellent suggestions directly to Canon. That way they are aware of the suggestions, gripes etc and deploy these via firmware, updates, upgrades etc. if and whenever possible.

Ex. I wrote to Canon support the other day about DPP not offering a very simple command called RENAME. RENAME should appear in a right click (i.e. context menu) on a photo but does not. Each to time I rename an image I have to shell out to Windows Explorer and perform this task. (Yes I am aware of the batch process but that is multi stepped. I also know you can rename a folder but why no single photo/file?) I finally got fed up and instead of griping here I wrote to support and received the following reply from Rodney in Canon Support: "We appreciate your continued correspondence regarding the EOS 5D Mark III and Canon software. A rename option in Digital Photo Professional is a very good suggestion. We thank you for this feedback and I will make sure to pass this along towards the appropriate parties for consideration. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your inquiry about the EOS 5D Mark III and Canon software. Thank you for choosing Canon." So let's take all of these great suggestions and get them in the hands of the people that can do something. To get you started here's the email for EOS Canon support: [email protected]. Lastly (and I hope you do send your valuable comments to them) please share with us the reply you have received.

In windows 7, I click alt-R and it brings up a rename file window in DPP. You can highlight one file or a group and have a very powerful renaming tool. Custom name, by date, and so on.

I think there is a lot of free software that will let you customize the right click menu so you could add the rename function while in DPP, but I'm happy with alt-R

this may sound retarded but here goes
I have been a long time windows user and changed to mac
Is there anyway to batch rename files in a mac without additional software
in windows its as simple as highlight all the files right click rename and it automatically add a sequential number to the name you give it. I cant seem to see anything on the mac that can do that :-[

I wish the fat cats/directors/the board/the ones pulling the strings and direction of Canon would be as die hard fans as most of you here - they would do well. But unfortunately, the direction of Canon and their product launch is being dictated by $$$. They are in this for the $$$. If they could direct their focus, for just one moment, on delivering what the current Canon users want, maybe then.

Mt. Spokane - thanks for the ALT+R tip ( I am aware of many short cuts such as CTRL+K after you have partially typed an email address in Outlook) but have not heard that one! Thanks - I did however download the nifty program but found it a bit convoluted. I searched further and found http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html. At the bottom I downloaded the latest. I liked this one a bit better as it is easier to sift through but also more importantly it appears that it auto highlights in pink the Context Menu options already in place vs. sifting through a whole bunch. Have you tried God Mode? http://www.tomshardware.com/news/GodMode-Windows-7-How-to,9345.html I don't believe any of this cool stuff is on Macs :) . Love my freedom of choice.

I've used the built-in Automator tool on my Macs to do mass file renaming in the past, but it takes a bit of learning to figure out how it works. It's a script programming tool.

No, you can't, you either have to use automator or a piece of custom software. It's not you but OS X that is retarded. ctrl+a, f2 is the easy way, why os x lacks this feature is beyond me.

I'll check those out. I haven't tried any of them. I could go into the registry, but I reserve that for really important things.

It used to be that a mouse came with software to alter the right click context menu, but that was 20 years back.

Maybe its worth looking at a photographic workflow which suits your needs. Just importing photos into folders I find very inconvenient and more time consuming.

With Lightroom or Aperture you can batch rename very easily and then flag, colour code, rate etc etc then edit and export in multiple ways all in one program. DPP is poor IMHO. You can also export and edit in more powerful programs like PS then save and it saves a new version. Making workflow very easy and keeps everything in one place.

You can also sync libraries so if you use a Laptop you can work on the project while on location then sync back in the studio. You can also save specific shoots as new libraries and work on them specifically, or if you work with people give them the library to edit too and it syncs again. Also helps when shooting weddings etc the more projects you have the slower the program works by being able to work on specific projects it means you can concentrate on that one specifically and also easier to back up each individual shoot. Everyone is exported and backed up on Blueray, and then also backed up using the programs back up tool and also on another server for 3 back ups. Perfect photographic workflow.

And to answer the OPS question. Nice one nice to see someone being positive.

On my dpp when I batch process raw files it allows me to choose which name i want and any subsequent number... If you are referring to the desktop/outside of dpp/lr/aperture then no clue

Can you give me an example of the file names...as they are, and how you'd like to alter them to be?
Mac is basically working on top of BSD Unix, and has all the unix toolset there...things like sed, awk, rename, etc....

I might could find you a quick command line script to convert them...

you know just a pile of CR2 file straight out of camera then you want to give them a name more related to what or when they were taken for example the shot date then it automatically adds a subsequent numerical increment to each.

anyway the way i get around this now is rename and convert to dng in lightroom now so its not a huge issue anymore just a peeve. But for my workflow before i bring anything into lightroom i open a folder of the files in bridge and do an initial cull of way off shots just deleting not tagging or rating that way i dont import so many files into lightroom to start with.

In windows this is accomplished simply by right click - rename (doesnt get much more simple than that)

most of my new to mac peeves i have found way around but this one is still there I though i was just dumb not being able to find it but having to wirte code to do such a simple task? retarded
i know you can buy little programs to do it but i object to have to install some poxy additional program to do something that should be OS embedded

next person near me that spins me the line "but macs just work" gets a punch in the face :o

Well, for most things...I think macs 'do' just work..for the common person. My Mom for instance....I tried forever to get her to use windows...explicit instructions...she just could not get it.
I took her to an apple store, set her in front of an imac...showed her a couple things..and said to play with it while I shopped.
I didn't do anything but stand back..and watch her. It was intuitive enough for her to start surfing the web on her own...etc. Stuff she's never done before.

That being said...can you give me an example of what your files might look like...like 2-4 names and what you'd like them changed to? If I can come up with something quick and dirty I'll post it.

Is it something like :

0001.jpg
0002.jpg
,,,

changing to
key_west_0001.jpg
key_west_000.jpg
...

?? ::)

I work mostly with linux at home and professionally, so to me...it is common to use the command line, you can do some powerful things with a few lines (often one liner things) that would take you a ton of time to do clicking on a GUI...some things you could not do at all really using a mouse on windows, etc.
But it is all a matter of what you're used to....

You can actually do much more than just text manipulations, I've only played with it a little bit...but on linux and mac systems..you can use things like Imagemagick http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php and do some pretty fancy bulk image manipulations....that can get quite powerful. <P>

One should never be too old to learn new tricks...

At least...that's what I keep telling myself.
:)

The BoD of any company should dismiss any management that doesn't arrange to actively seek out the freely available customer feedback on the Internet in forums like these and integrate it into development plans.

You would do it for your little business, looking at what people say about your work, and there is more reason, not less, to do it for a big business, where you would have the resources to fully delight your customers. The business that care this way will have dedicated followers; the businesses that don't will have ambassadors of bad will.

Frankly, I'm glad to see these types of comments regarding Macs. I continuously hear (being in IT) how the Mac is so much better than Windows. I find most of the people saying this are comparing new Macs to Windows Xp which is now officially 11 years old. There are deficiencies in all OS's and their packaged hardware. None are infallible to attacks, viruses, wear and tear, etc. It's disgruntling with Macs/Apples that you have to succumb to Apple's way of thinking vs. freedom of choice as with other OS's. A caged environment demanding top dollar on everything.
