I just upgraded from a 7D (which I still have) to a 5Diii, and it's an amazing upgrade! I'm starting to wonder if my 7D needs some service work because the difference was so dramatic. My lenses are alive, alive!! Since I am getting into portraits and other possibly paid work, I'm debating trading in the 7D for another 5Diii (the 5Diii really is amazing in IQ, focusing, even the HDR is great though not perfect). I was also thinking of trading the 7D for a 5Dii, or maybe just send in the 7D for some a tune-up (it's only got about 15000 clicks on it). I lean slightly towards the 5Dii, because that will leave some funds for another lens (maybe 16-35 or tam 24-70). Any advice? Thanks!

One advantage the 5DII still has over the Mk III is the possibility to change the focus screen, something I find absolutely necessary for MF purposes.
Wonder what's up with your 7D, I have no complaints about mine - even with a 5DMkII in my collection. Did you try a factory reset? Maybe you've got some settings/color profiles all wrong.

I am also not a fan of the 7D after using 5D2 and 5D3. To my eyes, the iq difference is obvious. I am actually putting mine up for sale today. It is working fine but just not capable of rendering the level of detail of the ff. I gave it a try yesterday with the 135 f2, having thought that perhaps it was an issue with using a cheap kit lens. Results were okay but the 5D3 files just blew it away.

Change the focus screen??? Does that mean being able to switch to live fiew and zoom in on your subject while manually focusing to ensure that your subject is locked in exactly where you want? I use that on my 60D often enough and it isn't something I would want to lose.mrsfotografie said:

Let's not disparage all crop sensors. They do give you extra reach and when shooting in good light outdoors with nice lenses, they give a near equal quality of image to their full frame counterparts. And if you are shooting sports, either the 60D, 7D, and presumably the 70D will give you more frames per second than the 5d mkii and some 1D models.
Along with the extra reach of a the 1.6 conversion factor and you have yourself some great quality images. Where they suffer in comparison is low light because of the amount of grain. But if you are indoors and using a flash, that can be mitigated... So it is what it is.

I do love my 7D. It's amazing for sports, and with the 10-22 on there I have gotten some superb landscape images (credit to the scenery, not necessarily the photographer). But with a 50 1.4 and 100 2.8, the 5Diii just seemed to be significantly better (sharper, greater contrast, dynamic range, etc as expected to some degree with the FF), and even when manual focused the 7D wasn't coming out great. With the AF, the 5Diii has been accurate 99% of the time, while the 7D maybe 50-60% of the time even in decent lighting (soft window light midday). I used to think I just got some rough copies of my lenses, but now thinking it may be the 7D?

ha funny because i made a similar change and the difference was amazing.
i have a 5d2 and 7d and just got my 5d3 this week it seems leaps and bounds better than both of my other bodies but so far in terms of image quality its the EXACT same as my 5d2 .. the 7d i mainly used for video but since the 5d3 films at 60fps the 7d will go on the selling block.

Yes you will see a big difference not only due to the full frame aspects but also as 5D3 is a newer product with several years worth of advancement from its older crop cousin. But I know some great 7D folks who produce stunning pictures. Having said that, I also don't buy into the "reach" argument of crops as I think the quality of some of the newer FF after manual cropping still generates very good results even with fewer pixels in those cropped area.
As for lenses, you probably already noticed that what was a tight framer on the crop is no longer tight on FF. And UWA that were splendid on crops show their weak points on the expanded FF sensor... even so, 16-35II is a good zoom in the Canon lineup...not the sharpest mind you, but produces some great shots in the right hands. It is also one of those lenses that come into their own on the full frame. And oh, welcome to Full frame.

What makes me love using the mkIII more than the mkII are the subjective things like the more robust feel of the body, the better rear LCD, the revised controls and most of all....the silent shooting mode. I also like the electronic level; a must for my architectural shooting. Oh yeah, the AF is waaay better and raises my keeper rate on my 70-200 f2.8 tremendously.
I had the optional focusing screen for the mkII that was supposed to aid in manual focus and found it entirely useless.
Live view is THE way to go but then you really need to be on a tripod. Of course when I use my TS-E lenses that's where I am.

Thanks for the responses! It's good to see what others experiences are in terms of upgrading or comparing 7D to 5Dii/iii. The crop vs ff is another discussion that can debate the advantages of both. My biggest concern is that my 7D may have had other issues based solely on the dramatic improvement in IQ and AF with the 5D, but that seems to be at least somewhat consistent with others.
The Canon 24-70 sounds much better than the Tammy based on others feedback, but is $600-800 more. If you had the choice... 5Dii and Canon 24-70, or 5Diii and Tam 24-70?

Lens first if you can wait to upgrade the body later. Get a refurbed or used 5DII now and you won't lose much on trying to sell it later. Prices for the 5D III went down to 2500 near Christmas.
