Just wondering about why you might purchase certain lenses if you shoot film too

I read many many many posts about people possibly or not buying or selling their glass since they 'might' go FF one day. For some it is an eventuality and for others it is a possibility. The 5D3 seemed to push quite a few shooters over the edge but as a happy 1.6er on a 7D and a mix of L and EF-s glass I am content to stay cropped.

I was wondering how many out there are in my shoes. I buy so I can shoot both 1.6 and EOS film. I have an Elan 7 which I love and can use all my lenses save the 10-22. Recently I found I wanted a not too wide lens which was compact, light, inexpensive and fit the bill for family travel. I have had a variety of primes in the past and ALMOST decided on the Siggy 30 1.4 but my film desires told me not to let another lens into my bag that doesn't go both ways. I decided on an oldie but goodie which I had once, and used at that, the EF 35 f/2. I bought a new copy this time . The '56' FL isn't too tight indoors and is a great snapshot length with kids and while out and about ala Disneyland etc.

Who else buys for film and digital and what do you shoot with?

Any of the EF lenses will work great with film. The added coatings for digital use will benefit film to a smaller extent, but will be fine.

Just pick your focal length. As you know, multiply the crop focal length you use by 1.6 to get the same framing, so, if you like 24mm on a crop, it will be approcimately equivalent to the 35mm on FF.

Thanks Spokane but the things you pointed out I have had a grip on for many years already and after rereading my post I didn't think it looked as if I needed a lesson. Thanks anyway. Just opening up a chat post for film and dig lenses, here it's usually all about crop vs FF.

I have a very similar setup to you. I mainly shoot with my 7D, but then picked up an EOS 3 used for $200USD about a year ago! It's an amazing camera. I hadn't shot film in about 10 years since that. I think it's amazing to go back to film now after working with digital for years. The beauty of digital is the ability to experiment more with exposures and see immediate results. I feel like I have learned so much with digital, and can now use that skill to have more consistent success with film.

It is great to use both as it makes you feel like you have 2x as many lenses! Also, choosing different films and working within it's boundaries really brings out the creativity

I then recently picked up a few used cheap AI-s Nikon lenses to use on my 7D for video... So then I thought, "why not get a nice used manual focus Nikon to play around with THESE lenses too!"

So I bought a mint Nikon F3! Beautiful pro (for it's time) camera.

It's a great time to work film back into your photography kit because the gear was made to last and it is so affordable now!

I just recently bought a Mamiya 645 camera kit with an 80mm f/2.8 lens brand (like)new in the box for $500 USD.


So I guess I missed the memo about Canon vs Nikon, digital vs film and 35mm vs 120... because, why not use all?!
