Kitlenses - 50D

Hi,

I would like to buy me a 2nd Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. But during my search I also saw a few other lenses that made me wonder if they would be a good alternative..
- Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (non STM) I have the opportunity to buy a second handed one at 175€..
- Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
- Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
- Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Anyone for some advice, or good occasion tips? Thx!

The 15-85 is optically very good. Skip the 17-85. The 18-135 has more range, but similar IQ to the 18-55. For a superzoom, consider the new Tamron 16-300 instead of the Canon 18-200.

I have a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (the non-VC model) and I like it; the focus motor is a bit noisy and the zoom ring turns the other way but it is a pretty cheap way to get to f/2.8.

Either the 17-55mm (not in your list) or the 15-85mm. One will give you larger aperture for stopping motion and indoor shooting, the other will give you more reach. Depends on what you feel missing more in your current equipment.

Don't know what you are lookig for in terms of your photographic styles and needs, but when I had a 50d, the 15-85 was my mainstay. That and a 10-22 and a 70-200 would suffice for almost everything you need in terms of focal lengths. Beyond that, it depends on what you are wanting (ie. do you concentrate on landscape, portraits, wildlife, etc.)

Hi thanks for the replies!

As a planespotter I'm using 50D's and 70-300 IS L + 400 L non IS, so enough mm's there.

I want to use my current 18-55 non IS lens on a back-up 400D for some family-pics, and that's it.
This means my new 'smaller' lens needs to serve for photo's of static/expo and some taxyshots of planes. For this 55mm is fine, but a bit more is better. IS is a must

Therefore my budget is limited to approx. 200€.
