Lens Assistance

Hey Guys/Girls
I currently have a 5d iii and a 50mm 1.4 and a 70-200 f2.8 is ii. However, I don't have anything that is a 'walkaround lens' so here lies my dilemma. I recently went to the local camera store and tried out the Canon 24-70 ii and the vignetting wide open at 24mm was terrible, so I am considering maybe a 24mm 1.4 or a 24-70 or possibly even a 16-35.

I am open to any other suggestions of what lens to use as a walk around.

Just choose the focal length you like most and buy it. I don't know why vignetting is a problem for you, you can use lens profile to remove it or leave there to draw attention to the image center

But I think that is another issue because a zoom is convenient one stop shop where as prime takes away the convenience for IQ.


I must admit I'm not a fan of strong vignetting, I am going to try another 24 70 ii, hoping that the first one I tried was a dud.

Also would a 24mm be too wide as a walk around?

Personally I find 24mm great for landscapes, but useless for people photography. I mainly shoot people and simply don't like the look it provides.

I don't understand why vignetting is bothering you, it is easily fixeable:

I didn't see that problem with the 24-70ii I rented last weekend. As the poster above notes you can correct it in camera jpeg or through raw processing in post. Then again I don't often shoot flat grey walls so its hard to get a feel for it...

Today I went to use another 24 70 ii, and the first copy I looked at must have been a dud. This was much better, I know that you can correct vignetting post processing, but its really not a look which I like in my photos (personal preference).

I think I will rent a copy of a 24mm just to see how it is with people photography, but i can understand how it can be too wide.

Sounds like the 24-105; the best walkaround available for FF.

the only limiting factor on the 24-105 in my opinion is the f4, I would prefer a lens wider than 2.8!
