Looking to upgrade to the 1Dx

Just curious on what most people think when the best time it would be to purchase the 1DX. I currently own a 1DIV & would love to upgrade to the X with the talk of the upcoming Xii to release shortly! The price of the X had dropped significantly lately due to this. I can get the X for about $4,500 & with me trading in my IV & getting about $900-$1,000 would come to around $3,500. The Xii is gonna be way out of my price range unfortunately but I feel the X is a huge step forward for me shooting full frame! OR do I hold onto my IV until the Xii drops? I'm sure the price of the X will drop again (but who knows how much) but also will my trade in value for my IV! Just trying to get the best deal possible! Thanks in advance everybody!!!

I wouldn't like to suggest the best time to get the 1DX, as you say asthe price of the 1DX drops so does the Mk4.
I certainly think that you will be very impressed by the 1DX. I made the same move and there is no downside, except price! Whilst the Mk4 is a great camera the 1Dx is just better, faster, more detailed images, better ISO, AF etc etc. I was quite surprised to see that I lost no reach with the larger, less densely populated, sensor - if anything I think it gains a touch of reach over the Mk4 due to it's better detail resolution.
Happy deciding!

You can get a new 1D X for $4199 from a Authorized US Dealer, not a gray market import. The dealer can't advertise the price, but Canon Price Watch will refer you to a dealer who will honor that price. Its usually one of the big dealers you would buy from anyway.

Don't throw away $300 plus take a big loss on a trade in. Sell your MK IV, the going price is $1400-$1600 depending on condition, of course. If you want to give it away for $900, send me a PM.

Ty Johnf3f for ur reply! Ur r correct regarding reach...I took some amazing NYM spring training shots earlier this season & borrowed a friend's 1Dx along w 300 2.8. Blown away by thie images I didn't notice much loss in reach at all! Plus w that full frame sensor I'd gain an advantage w cropping! Some feel a 5 yr or so old camera is a waste spending that much but it has dropped significantly & who really knows how much more it will! I think I already made up my mind now I just have to tech deep down in my pockets lol! However finally switching to full frame I truly do feel this may be my last body for quite some time now...yeah right! Check out my recent shots here:

Ty Mt Spokane as well & I appreciate ur input as well! Unfortunately I cannot afford to sell my IV & wait for the X since I need it to replace asap...im leaving out of town next week along w gigs coming up! I don't know where u see trade ins r going for btwn $1,400-$1,600??? I'm dealing right now w 3 major U.S. Dealers & all quoting me btwn $800-$1,000 depending on my quality (btw my IV is in excellent condition as when I purchased used)! And actually B&H is not even taking any more IVs as of yesterday....they have like 25 already used! I wish I could get more but that's the biz I guess...the retailers have u by the b**s!
Any additional help would be great guys!

Haha! Yes, they were my thoughts exactly. US$900 is a very, very good deal for the 1D Mark IV.

I am sure there are a few here that would like a PM if it is going at that price! Pity I am on the wrong continent. ;D

Again.....no idea where u guys r seeing retailers offering that high for a used IV! Unless ur speaking of private buyers such as on eBay or Craigslist? I'm sorry but I would never buy or sell something w a high value on sitesike that sorry maybe it's just me! I'd buy a shirt for $20, maybe even a pair of Jordans (& they're usually fake most of the time) on sites such as these, but a Rolex, camera, etc. I'd rather spend a few more bucks & go the legit route sorry...again maybe it's just me but I value piece of mind! So yeah, I'll sell it to ya for $900 USD...just add the $300 or $400 shipping to ur continent lol!

:D Definitely send Mt Spokane Photography a private message then. I doubt he will say no to US$ 900 for a 1D Mark IV if it is in good working order. That really is very good deal.

Hope you enjoy the 1D X. I do, absolutely love it and still remember the first "real" picture I took with it, when I just thought to myself "Oh, ****!". :D

Thanks BigAnt! Great shots u got there but Lmk what u think of my 2 links I posted above of some baseball & F1 racing....as well as all my photography especially sports @ www.emcphotography.com. I can afford the X now but def not the Xii releasing shortly! Just time for me to go into full frame....for some time now! I am hearing the X surpasses my IV in light years!
And Ty exp...but can't go that route! I need to do a trade in on the spot since I cannot go w/o a body w work coming up!

I was asking the same question back in March when authorized dealer pricing was between $5,500 and $6,000. Since an big event was quickly approaching where I could use the performance features of the 1Dx, I took the plunge with a reputable gray-market dealer for $4,500. I'm glad I did. I shot numerous sporting events since then (about 25,000 images) and found this body to be a valuable asset for increasing my keeper count and for getting shots that I would have otherwise missed. [Note that "keeper count" is different than "keeper rate". At 12 FPS, the shutter button has a light touch and I often get two shots when I only wanted one. I take more images and throw more away, but there are still more "favorites" among those that I keep.]

I would expect the prices of the 1Dx to continue to fall until we see a date for the announcement of it's successor. The 1Dx2 would likely be introduced at a price between $6,000 and $7,000 (the original price of the 1Dx). In theory, demand for the 1Dx could actually rise once we see the price of the 1Dx2.

So, advice? If you can benefit from the performance features of the 1Dx now, then get it now. If not, take your chances and wait.

Thanks to all who contribute to these forums. It has helped me in my decision. After looking at the B&H site for the past 8 months this morning I took the plunge and bought one. Lots of things coming with it from B&H, 32 GB card, bag,Vello wireless remote, Pixma Printer, and paper. $350 rebate as well because of the printer all for $4249 after rebate. Decided that I live only once and I don't want to be the richest man in the cementary.

The going price is not a trade in price. They give you about 70% or less of the normal selling price for trade in equipment, so you lose a lot. In your case, it sounds like $600 or $700 depending on the condition.

The price I'm referring to is the selling price of the Camera on the Fred Miranda web site where many photographers sell their cameras.

I don't know where you are located that it would cost $300 to ship a camera to the USA, a 1D MK IV weighs maybe 7 lbs to ship, which might run $65 for priority mail express to Germany, or $25 to ship from NYC to Spokane.

Buy that new camera outright and then sell your used one. It will sell in a day for $1400 on Fred Miranda.

No, s/he was referring to my post which said at that price I too would be interested. Am sure you can see that if you read again. Alas, I am on a different continent and won't ever buy a camera which needs to be posted.

If I were you I would send the OP a message.

Cheers.
