Does anybody know a web site that would be appropriate to write a petition to Canon? Change.org maybe? I know it may sound a little bit crazy, but can all 1dx2 and 5dm4 owners ask Canon to add h.264 / 4k support via a firmware update? Or should I see a doctor myself? :)

Loving Mjpeg right now.

To pull frames it's perfect no questions, but if you're really into video, then you'll have to transcode mjpeg to h.264 and it seems like pain in the neck for me. It's not something that would require new hardware, especially considering they use h.264 for the 1080p video. Why not to get rid of this ridiculous limitation for the 4k content and make thousands of people happy?

There is approximately 99,99% probability that the lack of h.264 is due to not having efficient enough MP4 encoding hardware and 0,01% probability that it's something that can be changed via firmware.
I didn't think about processing power for h.264, you're probably right. I'm wondering how much details will be lost while converting from mjpeg to h.264 then?

The H264 codec is very efficient for STORAGE, but causes loss of unrecoverable quality during editing. Obviously, those people who do not intend to edit your videos, would prefer the camera to record internally in H264.

There is no hardware limitation that prevents 5D Mark iv encode H264 1080P resolution, but should be unable to H264 4K.

Canon will employ XF-AVC primarily in the Company's 4K-compatible professional-use video camcorders, such as the XC10 (to go on sale in mid June 2015) and EOS C300 Mark II (to go on sale in early September 2015)

5d4 is not strong enough to use XF-AVC professional codec. :-\

The Lensrentals teardown showed what appears to be a Digic DV5 processor (which is used in the XC10) so it should have the processing power to encode 4K h.264.

I think the issue is most likely cooling and the associated reliability in use. The cine cams I believe are ventilated (with the exception of the 1D-C which also happens to shoots 4K MJPEG). The 5D-IV does not have an appropriate heat sink to pipe heat away from the processor.

I would not hold my breath, but I'm willing to sign a petition in solidarity with the video shooters.

I read about issues with heating with 4K in general but at the same time, its about marketing. If you want 4K features, thats the cinema line. From Canon's perspective, they do not want products crossing into another product line. A line needs to be drawn as to how much a product can offer, otherwise you'll just have one expensive product and nothing else. Once it crosses that threshold, thats where the next model up or product line steps in.

No matter what Canon makes or Sony, Nikon, they will never be able to please the customers.

Why h.264?!?

One needs h.265. All programs already support it. No need from a previous generation codec.
