Miscellaneous Wildlife

I went to that locality to see a particular bird! No bird like that in the beginning and I took a few photos of Ghost Crab (frustrated that I will not see the bird)!

They are absolutely harmless! When you try to get closer they run like crazy into their burrows or dig themself in the sand. That makes them easy to catch and difficult to photograph.
Good to know. I will know when I dream about zombie crabs it's not real!
Beautiful couple of shots, by the way.

Old photos of the two species of Ghost Crabs existing here - just to make sure Eric sleeps well (:)): on clean sand they are looking different. The second one is the real "Ghost": small, well blending in the sand, very fast and you don't really realize what you noticed in the sand!

These are wild in Hawaii? Have you seen one catch a snake?
Off course they are wild! It's a Botanical garden not a Zoo! And they are everywhere!
No, I haven't seen one catching snakes and I hope it will stay like that: the only naturalized snake we have here is the Brahminy Blind Snake!
Small, blind and harmless if you don't take it in your hands - by my own experience! Take it in your hands and they will stink for a lot of time - it's only defense :ROFLMAO:!

Virginia is almost like this. I think there are only 5 venomous snake species mostly copperheads and you almost have to intentionally search for them. I don't any are strong enough to be more than a nuisance for people, but I have heard of cats and small dogs dying from venomous bites here.

As always, wonderful photos with the crabs, but why post a ghost before bedtime? I'm going to wake up with something in my bed that looks like Coors light, but probably tastes better...

Are they edible? (Sorry, but I'm French) ;)
Just dreaming of a yummy-yummy crab bisque...

I have no idea. I have seen only kids to chase and catch them - for the fun! And some photographers chasing them - also for the fun!
Edited: Right now I found in the Wikipedia that they are edible but not much to eat there.

The clouds had started rolling in so I tried to find some of the Merriam's Chipmunks in the mixed forest. This one, while having the muted markings, decided to pose on its way across a fallen trunk.
