"Open Box" Cautions

I have seen ads from reputable (?) dealers advertising what they call "open box" items at substantial discounts, but the ads were vague on warranties, rebates, and return policies. Being a cautious person, I asked the nice folks at Tamron what they thought of the items being offered. Here is their reply, and hope it is helpful to those of you who might consider these apparent deals:

Hello,

Open box means used so there are no rebates available to receive nor is there any warranty. The return policy is totally up to the dealer; they vary from dealer to dealer. Normally it is anywhere from 10-30 days. The dealer normally won’t take any returns back unless it is in new condition. However, there is the chance that the customer wanted to return the lens because it was not working properly. So yes there is always a risk when purchasing open box.
