Replacement to the EF-S 18-200 IS?

A patent has come about showing two lenses, one for APS-C at 18-200 and the other for full frame with a focal range of 28-200.

We’ve been told in the past that the 18-200 would be getting replaced, and we have heard about an EF-S 18-300 in development. It would also be a good idea to release an inexpensive superzoom for a full frame camera as well. The 6D would welcome such a lens.

EF-S 18-200 is hardly exciting given Sigma and Tamron are at 250mm+ on their similar models. It would be welcome if they could push the wide angle though.

In full frame land, if they can do a cost reduction exercise on the 28-300L that'll do nicely I think. The 35-350L was quite nice too, if only the sample I tried didn't have mechanical problems I would have kept it.

Now if only someone could just make a fast zoom lens instead of these perpetually re-introduced slow lenses that we already have dozens of examples of.

Those lenses are perpetually re-introduced because they are money makers.

Around here there is always at least one shop selling the Tamron 18-270mm with a rebel as a kit, because people keep asking for that kit.

The 60D + EF-S 18-200mm is a very popular kit (quick search came up with 8 Israeli shops offering it, and there are several such offers on Amazon), because amateurs like it. I've seen photographers taking photos on the street with an xxD & 18-200mm since at least the days of the 40D.

yes but they provide equal image quality to shooting through a bowl of custard
if canon can make an 18-200 to rival nikons 18-200 VR2 lens it will be a very good thing

the 28-200 for FF is interesting if it has decent IQ and is compact it might be a nice travel lens

I used to have the Tamron 18-270 and in practice, it was reasonable enough although lacked a bit on the long end. But people using those types of lenses aren't after ultimate image quality anyway, providing it is good enough.

While I haven't used it, I believe the existing 28-200 is considered a dog. They may have to start from scratch if they're going to re-invent that.
