I'm pretty sure that it has a Foveon sensor...

If it is Foveon like, it has the best ISO range ever for a Foveon sensor. That is if ISO 6400 is usable.
How are Foveon resolutions supposed to be expressed?

The Sigma SD1 sensor is 4800x3200 (x3 layers) capturing light in 46 megaphotodiodes delivering images which are 15.36 megapixels.

If you were to scale Sigma's APS-C to full-frame:
15.36MP x (1.5)^2 x (3 layers) = 34.56MP x (3 layers of equal resolution)
= 103.68 megaphotodiodes

If the Canon sensor is a layered sensor then, is it 50.x megapixels or 50.x megaphotodiodes?

My guess is it's a Sony sensor. Wasn't Canon quoted as saying "we will use the best sensors available in our cameras." recently?

Seems to me that statement has enough wiggle room to allow for other companies' sensors, or sensor technologies, while still maintaining an element of Canon bravado.

If you are only going to use/plan to use Canon-only sensors, that is not the answer you would give unless you followed up with "...which are always Canon sensors"

I couldn't agree more. Even though Canon is actually using a Sony sensor already in the G7 model, that statement was clearly made to break the ice and let people know that the future can and will look different. Enter 5Ds
