The cost to repair a front element is about the same as replacing the filter. There is possibly some internal damage to the lens, so have it checked out. Cracked parts have a way of failing just when you need them.

I use hoods for protection but it won't help if it is just the right size like a door knob.

Yea, IMO you are lucky. When I think of filters for protection - that kind of impact is not what I'm thinking about since it can actually do more damage to the front element.
