Hi all, I'm doing a documentary photo shoot of a film festival tonight. There will be many low light situations. I can't use flash or lamps. Using a 5D mark III and 50mm Zeiss 2.0 and one leg Manfrotto tripod. Any advise how to prepare for the shoot? What should I keep in mind? I want to make portraits, catch the atmosphere of the festival. What camera settings would be best? Thanks, have a nice day.

Don't be afraid to use a high ISO setting. Change the iSO according to circumstances. If you are making stills with 1/300 of a second and F7.1, choose a lower ISO. If you are taking pictures with 1/10 of a second and F2,8, opt for a much higher ISO if you can.
Be practical. If you have a zoom lens, use it. Do not expect studio quality photographs (which are mostly boring anyhow). Choose interesting, vivid subject and you will be fine. Don't hesitate to discard pics that have come out badly. Have no regrets.
If you have only that 50 mm lens, you will be forced to come close to your subjects. Don't be shy! (but stay friendly and polite, of course.)
Of course, after taking each photograph, check it using the [>] button on the left of the back of your camera. Enlarge it to check sharpness. If unsharp, try and take the picture again or ajust the ISO setting if neccessary.

One leg tripod? Do you mean a monopod?
My advice. Ditch the monopod, it will slow you down. You'll be moving in and out of people and you'll prob need both hands. Instead bump up the ISO. The 5D mk III should give you clean shots all the way to at least ISO 3200, crank it up and sort it out in post.
It might be hard to stop motion so be prepared to capture some motion blur and creatively work it in.
It's a shame you can't use strobes. Maybe if you talk to the organisers and explain how you will bounce it rather than blast it peoples faces, they'll be more sympathetic.
Use what you can to brace your camera. Tables, walls, an upside down glass. It all makes a difference.
Don't you have anything wider than a 50mm? Try a 35 if you can, (1/focal length advantage) you could always crop later. Or even better get a hold of (rent) the 24mm f/2.8 IS the ultimate low light handholdable lens!

Think about your final resolution export size and the min. iq you can get away with, then determine a max iso you can use (you should have time for that...) so that nr doesn't waste your shots. Of course the max nr depends on the detail of the scene, but at least you should have an idea. Still, a noisier shot is better than a blurred one... but you should be ok, I even shots demonstrations at night with fast movement with my 60d & 50/1.8 @iso6400, but of course @1:1 pixel level the noise was very bad.
