Re-kitting on FF

Hello, everyone!

I have a 60D, ready to go full frame for better ISO and overall IQ. Shoot variety of subjects from family candids (2-year old), sports (in and out), macro, events/ festivals, and some landscape. I plan on keeping my 100L macro (love, love this lens!), and I have an X100S on order which will be my everyday, walk-around camera (effective 35mm focal length). I also have the 40mm pancake which I'd keep so, I have 35mm, 40mm and 100mm FLs covered. I also have a good monopod, tripod and flash. Questions:

• Do I sell the 60D or keep it to house a 70-200 II or 70-300L solely for sports/wildlife (given its reach advantage)? I could see keeping this if I go with the 6D but with a 5D III will I really want to shoot the 60D for sports (even with the loss of reach)?
• I also have the 17-55mm and Tamy 70-300 VC (like the lens to 200 in full light but not so hot to 300) both of which I'll probably sell regardless and due to a tax refund, have about another $5,000 or so to put towards the new body and glass. Call it $6,000 with the sold stuff plus whatever I could get for the 60D if I decide to sell.
• Ideally, I'd like to be as efficient as possible in that I don't want to change lenses constantly and would like to keep my total number of lenses at 5 or 6 most.

What body and lenses would you add given this information? Thank you kindly in advance!

You won't use your 60D once you get FF. The only reason to consider keeping it is for a backup or second shooter.

It doesn't hurt to wait and see, some people prefer point and shoot cameras to DSLR's, and for them, its the right decision.

If you look at my signature, I'm thinking selling my 50L & 40mm. My Sony RX1 can handle low light very well. I like to keep the gear that I use everyday, not few times a year :-X.

+1 except I'd go for the 5D3 and not the 6D.

I agree with Mt Spokane that most people will not use their crop bodies once they go FF. I am an exception. I do use my 7D. If you find the need for a crop body later on, pick up a used 7D down the road, they should be plentiful and cheap.


Edit: For me choosing between the 50L or 35L would be tough. I want both but I'm dragging my feet waiting for Canon to update the 35L (WS) and update all their 50s. If I had to pick today, I'd go 35L.

I've recently done the same and upgraded from 7d (+ 60d) to 5dmk iii. Sold my 7d but kept the 60d as I like the flippy screen. I've kept my 17-55 as I like the IS and zoom range for video. Other than that I have been selling all my crop lenses and trading up for better L glass.

Most of the time I leave my samyang 8mm on my 60d. just because its so much fun.

A 70-200 on a FF makes for a fabulous landscape kit.

I just added the 5D3 + 24-105 f4.0L IS to my collection. (The 24-105 with IS will be more useful for me than the 24-70 without.) The 60D is relegated to the kids along with an 18-135. But, I'm keeping he 7D for sports/second body with the 70-200 f2.8 II.

I most often shoot with two bodies (I hate changing lenses). For outdoor sports, I still anticipate using the 7D with the 70-200. For indoor sports, I expect to use the 5D3. I love the 70-200 for indoor candids at events, even though it is sometimes a little long for crop. But, I expect it to be even more useful on the 5D3.

In the short time that I've had the 5D3, it is easy to see that I will favor this body over the 7D most of the time. I may still end up switching lenses more than I did with two crop bodies just to keep the most desirable lens on the 5D3 for the given situation.

I hate to say this already, but I can easily see myself wanting a second 5D3 down the road and limiting myself to three lenses for most events -- 24-105, 70-200, and the 40.

Bottom line, it's way too early for me to give up on the reach (not to mention buffer and FPS) of the 7D for sports. Time will tell.

So true. I even tried to use my 60D as a backup camera. I don't even pick it up. It just sits in my bag with the body cap on. And when I get a 16-35, I'll have NO need for the 60D with my 10-22.

And I'd suggest this:
Keep your 100L, get a 70-200 II (on a 5D III you could always crop in. It retains AMAZING quality). Possibly pick up a 24-70 II (these things are fantastically sharp).
The 40mm is a good inconspicuous lens, but I feel that you could practically get the same results with the 24-70 II. For a prime I'd suggest an L prime (35 f/1.4L or 50 f/1.2L), but it all depends on your shooting style too.
