They are very good for the right people. I bought the wife a S95 years back. It struggled indoors and colors were a issue. The by far biggest issue we both had was pressing the tiny controls.

I bought a too cheap Nikon 9700 P&S ($125) for her to take horse riding, I figured it was a nice enough camera, and if it got busted up, it wasn't the $800 loss that my G1X would be. It turns out much to my surprise that she likes it and takes it everywhere. I was going to sell it when she returned, so I guess the G1X is now mine. I use it quite a bit. For serious photos, the 5d MK III is miles ahead of either one.
