Second Body

I've thinking about purchasing a second camera body. I currently have a 7D with the following lenses:

EF 35mm 1.4L
EF-S 15-85mm 3.5-5.6
EF 70-200mm 2.8 L IS II

I mostly photograph the kids (ages 7 months to 14) around the house, outdoors and at sports activities including from wrestling, cross country, football and baseball. The 7D really does a great job at the sporting events.

Recently, I've become more interested in landscape photography. We visited Arizona, Utah and Colorado for vacation last summer and I ended up taking hundreds and hundreds of landscape shots in addition to family shots at different places we visited.

I've been thinking a full frame camera will enhance my landscape photography IQ. I have been considering a 5D Mkiii's, but the new 6D looks like a good option for landscape photography also. Since I plan to keep the 7D for sports photography, speed really isn't an issue. I have enough money saved for either, so price isn't a primary concern.

Also, if I buy a FF camera, I will probably need to add a walk-around lens for the FF. My 35mm is a good lens for that, but I would have a gap between 35mm and 70mm (on the 70-200).

A 5DII or 6D with the 24-105mm kit lens sounds like the way to go...

Kind of a broad swath of plans, but I really didn't see a specific question. Three statements stick out though, 6D vs 5D III, new walk around lens and landscapes.

Enough money saved? Great. So with money not the issue my suggestion is;

The 5D III, sole reason is the 1D like af system that it has. No other reason would stack up with this one in the 6D vs 5D III debate IMO.

The new 24-70 II, it doesn't get nicer for a zoom in that range.

Add a 24mm f/1.4L, TS-E 24mm or the Ziess 21mm and you have the start of a nice landscape kit.

With this kit you will find your 7D sitting idle much of the time.

5D3, because it won't limit you later on and you may find your 7D on ebay of you like the 5D3 alot.

Sell your 7D and lenses, except 70-200. Keep 35L if budget is not issue.

Buy 5D III + 24-70 f2.8 II. Add 16-35 II or 17-40 for landscape.

Your kids will be up and running soon. With one single cross center, 6D might not be a right choice to keep up with the kids. I have a 4yrs and 1.5yr.

If you can swing it - the 5d3 will leave you set for a few years without thinking. If you wanted to put a lens in there, either the 24-105f4L IS or the 17-40f4 (a bit cheaper).

Can the 6d/5d2/5dC do this? Yes, but the 5d3 will take a 1.4x tele really nicely with your 70-200 IS2. You'll love shooting 1600ISO inside.

Sorry, I should have added that I would like to keep 2 camera bodies. There are times at sporting events when switching lenses takes too long, so I like the idea of having the 70-200 on one body and the 35mm or 15-85mm on the other for wider angle shots.

Sounds like the consensus is to go with the 5DIII and 16-35 II, 17-40, 24-70 f2.8 II or 24mm 1.4.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably wait a little to see if 5DIII prices drop a little more after the holidays.

Whatever you pick, its a good move to select one that uses the same battery and memory cards, that way you are not having to maintain two sets of equipment.
That eliminates the 6D, so another 7D, or a 5D MK II, or a 5D MK III.

A second hand 1ds mark iii. No idea why so many forget that.

I eventually want exactly that to go with my 7d. The 5d3 is out, I'll have more benefit with a 1d body. If that's the same for you, have a look. I know keh normally have some. Other options are a 1d mark iii maybe, but only because they're cheaper and the mark iv is still very expensive even second hand. However... It's not like its not worth looking.
