Should I try to fix my Canon EF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II?

Hey all,

New to the forums, but been lurking for awhile now.

I just bought this gem of a lens for $60.00 off eBay. Works great on my 40D and the image quality is excellent. It has somewhat of a cult following, some say its close to L quality...

However, the manual focus ring sticks sometimes. The auto focus is perfect, but I would like to see if I could repair or fix the sticky focus ring. Anyone have any suggestions, I would appreciate it...I only paid $60 bucks for it, so I actually was thinking of tearing it apart and cleaning and re-greasing it. Anyone have any experience tearing these down? Is it that difficult?

Well, thanks for the advice Jim, such a helpful bunch.

If he reads this, he'll probably have a useful answer for you. If he doesn't answer here, perhaps an e-mail in his direction is worth it. I don't know about fixing this lens, but I'd appreciate it if you'd keep in mind my taking the time out of my life to point you in the direction of an answer to your question.

Jim,

Your response went over my head, I apologize, I have no idea who Roger is, let alone the white courtesy phone.
Now that you explained your response, I get it...10-4

In that case I should apologize for being testy; for context Roger's blog is at lensrentals.com/blog and there's an awfully good chance he has seen the inside of one of these.

The white courtesy phone is directly a nod to this but to white courtesy phones everywhere. I mean if you can still find one...
