Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Night Shots, 960px wide, EXIF intact. Again, different types of light sources, no focus issues at all.
Note the sugar glass in the last two samples in almost complete darkness.

Cheers,
Jens

Eldar, candyman,

thanks, I'll keep you updated. So far, I didn't encounter any focus problems in any light situation. In the museum shots, it's halogen and tungsten, mixed with daylight. I have two jobs coming, one Sunday, one Monday to Wednesday. Daylight, indoor tungsten, indoor fluorescent, energy-savers, all mixed with daylight. I'll try the Sigma 50A, have the 24-70/2.8 L II with me as backup.

After completing to upload the 3 JPEGS from RAW, I'll add six night-shots, 960px, EXIF intact.

Cheers,
Jens

Thanks :)

So on the fence about cancelling until issues and supplies are all worked out...But keep imagining this will be a great newborn lens...

Sure hope I'm not getting one of the lenses the OCD folk are tweaking to death and returning. The stories here of lens churn are revolting.

Well Jens, That looks about what mine produced to begin with. I was very taken with the lens. But after a while ... it all changed. I hope for your sake that it continues to produce good results and I´m waiting to hear how it goes.

What do you mean? Did you do any firmware update? or any AFMA yourself?

I'm little... ??? ??? ???

I shot all images with a Canon 5D Mark III, with single-shot AF, with only the 41 cross-type AF-sensors active (my personal day-to-day setting, limiting AF precision-hassle when shooting with Canon's 50/1.2L or 85/1.2L wide open). I do combine the 41 cross-type sensors with half-pressiong the shutter-release three/four times in rapid succession ("spamming" the trigger, as Viggo said). So far, I am very happy with the results, couldn't detect mis-focus. Focus tracking, skin and eyes are still on my to-do-list ...

What I forgot to mention before: In addition to using only one of the 41 cross-type sensors, I almost always have the sensor in use switched to spot-focus mode.

PS: Thank you, jeffabbyben, metacove!

There is only one firmware version to choose from, the one it came with.

Yes I have had it through FoCal and a manual Lens Align. The problem is that the AF is unstable. One shot front focus, next shot back focus, third shot is dead on etc. FoCal was unable to determine the AFMA factor. The chart looked like it had been hit by a shot gun. That´s why I did a manual job with my Lens Align setup. It was depressing to see how much focus varied from one shot to the other.

I posted some images a couple of pages back on this thread.

Comment: Sorry; The images are on the other Sigma thread ...

Wow I didn't even think about that. If someone returns a lens after they changed settings with the usb dock I wonder how that works if you do/don't have the dock. Anyone?

I thought you mentioned AF on your 50mm ART is much better over 35mm ART? So, you and Viggo are not happy with AF? I wonder how is wickidwombat's copy doing...

It WAS awesome, calibrated and hit perfect. I stayed indoors for a few days test shooting, cuz I was sick. But when I went out nothing hit, absolutely all over the place. I dialed in a +12(!!) to my already +17 in the lens via docking, then it hit again, redid everything and it looked perfect, few more days and it was VERY unstable again! So after four times of that cr@p I sent it to a repair shop. So done with that AF .. Hopefully they can do something with although I doubt they have any spare lenses to swap with, I doubt it's any different and I doubt they have parts to replace with that's any different.

I have signed up at Nikon rumors (felt almost like a criminal :P) and posted a question there, to check if they have similar experiences. Apparently very few Nikon versions have been delivered, so the only answer I have so far is that there is none. I will follow up though.

Everyone's reaction when they first read this:

Have kept up with the thread but don't recall seeing this note from Sigma referred to:

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/faq/my-lens-is-frontback-focusing-is-there-something-wrong-with-it-what-should-i-do

Sigma claims all they need is the lens, not lens and body, so...Why can't Sigma simply include specific camera profiles in their USB dock software? "Click here for 5D Mk III" etc.

Viggo, I can, unfortunately, imagine the frustration. Question: You mentioned you had been sick. Was it contagious? Could the lens have become sick too? Maybe it just needed a little rest and chicken soup.

I tried giving it soup, but it fogged up and started to squeak, best to wait it out perhaps .
