The image on the left show the camera wide, while the image on the right shows it zoomed all the way out. Hand held. The yellow/green mark on the left shows where the player is standing.

That's a nice example of what the SX50 can do. I am continually surprised at how well it performs handheld and zoomed all the way out. The very first photo I took like that, the image on the back screen was jumping all over, I wasn't even sure what I was focused on, but the photo turned out very nice.

I plan to go back to the baseball park soon, and, will bring a monopod. When I snapped the pics above, I was curled up in my seat, knee raised to use as a foundation, one hand under the lens, holding my breath.

Somewhere on the forum I read that the newest version will go to 2000mm, a good crazy.

I wish the extended zoom feature was available in raw not just jpg.

I used Define to clean up the noise.

I have used the SX50 a lor for good bird photos. My favourite shot though is one of the Parthenon from the top of an apartment block in Athens, 2.2 km away. It was a typical hot evening with heat haze shimmer and and the Athens smog. 1200mm effective f, 1/320s, iso 80, hand held. Raw processed in DxO plus corrections for haze etc in PS. Downsized to 1200 px wide from 4000.

You want more. Well, here is a rainbow lorikeet at 1200mm, a well-known American at 674mm (I was able to sneak in a small camera into the audience) and sunset over Rome at 24mm.
