The Redbull Skydive team took the Canon EOS 7D Mark II to the skies and did what anyone would do, jumped out of a perfectly good airplane to capture some fun raw and graded video that really shows off the autofocus capabilities.

so how come we dont see nikon, samsung, panasonic, sony cameras taken too extremes like this???

LETS FACE IT FOLKS THERE IS NO PERFECT DSLR OR MIRRORLESS CAMERA IN THE WORLD ALL THESE CAMERAS OF TODAY HAVE SOME ISSUES OR TRADE OFF EITHER U HAVE GREAT OPTICS AND VIDOE OR YA CMERA IS ONLY GOOD AT 1 ONLY
EITHER YA CAMERA IS BUILT LIKE A TANK eg 7D 1 & 7Dmark 2 or ya camera is ball and fierce like the Sony A77r and A6000 series and etc
NO CAMERA IS PERFECT we but what we can afford and buy what were comfortable

I hope you don't think that skydivers only use Canon cameras.

GoPro is the camera of choice.... size matters :)

In this frame from the 7D2 video we see 4 people with something other than GoPros mounted on their heads... ( in other frames they looked like the Sony Actioncam, but most definitely not 7Da or even 1Dxs :) )

The second one is a gopro knockoff. Has nothing to do with SLRs.

And yes, lots of models are used. Most of the time it's to take pictures of people doing their tandem or AFF jumps. They are more likely to want to use a Rebel class camera for the weight factor. The 7d is a pretty hefty one to have on your neck during the parachute opening. The gopro, otoh, nearly nothing.

These are fairly easy with a repeatable pattern and a fixed distance, and with (nearly) all jumps done in clear skies, there is plenty of light so you can close down the lens and get a wider focal range. Realistically, they could turn off autofocus entirely and a while back, I suspect they did, just as I might do for a night dive with manta rays.

What they did in this 7d demo is film at f2, which is not so trivial an exercise. That was not done in the Nikon Dubai vids you referenced. And it was a composite of dives, not a single one.

Off topic, one friend of mine says that the sony action camera is better than gopro... :). I'll see if this is true though...

They could have cut out the first half of the video.

I think that pretty much any DSLR today could have taken these images. I did not see any thing special that the 7D2 provided.

At f/2? The subject distance is changing rapidly as the divers move around and the diver shooting the video moves closer and further away from the group. This test was really about how well the AF would work under these conditions. The video shooter said he's tried a lot of cameras and none were very useful shooting at wide apertures. He said the 5D3 was good but that the 7D2 was even better. Presumably the 1DX or the Nikon D4S would be great too but those are even larger and heavier which would be an issue strapped to your head whilst skydiving.

The fear of this is the autofocus system at f2. That awesome I can see when it is searching but it would be unwatchable with anything but a 70d 7d2 or upgraded c1/300. Does anyone know what they mean by raw video? I assume thy mean just one of th Downloade me LUTs for canon cameras.
