I think it would be optical elements or some parts that the focus motors rely on.
If not there would be a lot more lenses on the list.

The RF 100-300 f/2.8 and RF 400 f/2.8 is sure to be a popular combination at that price level.
The RF 400 f/2.8 is listed as "In Stock" at B & H.

Maybe it's just production capacity in general? I've no idea.

Optical glass production was an issue for a while, no clue anymore.

It may be a mix of things. Today they have the glass, but no chips. Tomorrow they have the chips and glass, but low on plastics and other internal parts.

It's definitely frustrating.

No. It effects everyone, Sony and Nikon included. Often longer waits than Canon has had.

Sony does not use as many specialized optics.
Nikon does and is far worse than Canon.

I lucked out and saw one on display at my local store. I went back in a week later after getting my finances in order and snapped it up. It was their only copy. Call around to non-chain stores if you need it.

Canon regularly restrict supply to generate more demand and thus re-inforcing their eye watering RRP price. Most vendors in the UK will stock to the inflated RRP figures if they are unsure on supply. Why discount if you can't actually get replacement stock.

Adorama îs showing an estimated ship date of 9/2023, but a few weeks ago they were showing estimated ship date of 12/2023. My advice is if you want the lens call around to smaller shops and see if they have one in stock. Good luck!

Adorama and B & H typically take far more preorders than they get in allocations.
In some ways, this is Canon's fault but Canon goes out of its way to stay in the good graces of smaller retailers.
Canon might be screwing Adorama and B & H out of allocations but they really do help them out in terms of support.
I imagine they are getting better prices as well, but I have know way of knowing.
