The Canon RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM supply issue may not be resolved in 2023

I would expect supply chain issues to impact any lens / cameras being released through 2024. While unfortunate I do find that if I place an order immediately during the official announcement that I always receive the item from the first batch. You can place an order and then if you decide a week later you can always cancel; with the item being in high demand the next person in line will buy your item.

That’s the best approach at this time, if you want something as soon as it’s available, definitely for high-end gear. If there’s a new product announced that I think I might want, I place a preorder as soon after the announcement as I can. I then have several weeks (or months) to decide if I really want it. Canceling a preorder is painless, and there are always others further down the queue.

I did that with the R3, the EL-5, the R8 and the 100-300/2.8. The R8 and EL-5 were in stock at some retailers immediately, but the wait was months for the R3 and is shaping up to be even longer for the 100-300/2.8.

For those waiting for a fixed RF 300mm f2.8: Asobinet has found a Canon patent for a fixed RF 300mm f2.8 and RF 400mm f2.8. As with the ‘new’ lens designs, a lot of the glass has moved from the front to the middle and rear of the lens.
The 300mm is about 5 cm / 2 inches shorter that the 100-300mm. There is no guarantee that this patent will ever reach production: ”That said, the 300mm F2.8 is covered by the recently released zoom lens " RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM ", so it seems unlikely that it will appear.

A different RF 300/2.8 patent published over a year ago (link). There was also a patent for a 300/2.8 + 1.4x TC (link).

I don’t think we will see any of these become products.
