I was 16th on an order list a couple of weeks ago and that list has been slowing but steadily dwindling down, I'm now 5th, hope to have it filled by mid August.

That’s the best approach at this time, if you want something as soon as it’s available, definitely for high-end gear. If there’s a new product announced that I think I might want, I place a preorder as soon after the announcement as I can. I then have several weeks (or months) to decide if I really want it. Canceling a preorder is painless, and there are always others further down the queue. While unfortunate I do find that if I place an order immediately during the official announcement that I always receive the item from the first batch. You can place an order and then if you decide a week later you can always cancel; with the item being in high demand the next person in line will buy your item.
I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked! The lens review is now on The Digital Picture: “the Canon RF 100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM Lens delivers exceptional image quality”.
I hope I did not ruin your day! Let me know if you want to get rid of the lens after reading the test.I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked!
Must say that I agree with the review. I am impressed with this lenses even with the RF 2x extender. The lens review is now on The Digital Picture: “the Canon RF 100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM Lens delivers exceptional image quality”.
Absolutely! That's what I did with the 135. Got it right on release date. That’s the best approach at this time, if you want something as soon as it’s available, definitely for high-end gear. If there’s a new product announced that I think I might want, I place a preorder as soon after the announcement as I can.
A different RF 300/2.8 patent published over a year ago (link). There was also a patent for a 300/2.8 + 1.4x TC (link). For those waiting for a fixed RF 300mm f2.8: Asobinet has found a Canon patent for a fixed RF 300mm f2.8 and RF 400mm f2.8. As with the ‘new’ lens designs, a lot of the glass has moved from the front to the middle and rear of the lens.
The 300mm is about 5 cm / 2 inches shorter that the 100-300mm. There is no guarantee that this patent will ever reach production: ”That said, the 300mm F2.8 is covered by the recently released zoom lens " RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM ", so it seems unlikely that it will appear.”
Enjoy the new lens. I expect this lens to be in my kit for the next decade or more. Finally got something heavier then my RF 28-70 hahaha, WOW, what a beast!!!
