The next Canon EOS R5 Mark II firmware update coming this month

I just came across a nice feature that I had missed. On the R5 and R7, the magnifying glass works only on stored images. On the R5ii, it works live so you can use it as a high powered spotting scope.

It is a feature I often used on the EOS R, especially when focusing manual lenses. Very useful, indeed!

I need an "off" customization possibility for that stupid Stills/Video switch. Or at least, a way to assign it a different function.
Two weeks with the R5 II, and I inadvertently switched on video half a dozen times.
My remedy has been to squeeze 3M VHB tape (very sticky) between this switch and the body, but I'd prefer a Canon software solution, of course.
And I also wish for an improved strobe-mount cover (already lost mine in the Austrian Alps ).

Have you compared the R5ii with the opposition? The tracking and detection of the old R5 is better than the Z8/Z9 from reports of those who have tried both and similar to the A1, and the R5ii is better than the R5. The charts on photonstophotos for DR, noise etc are pretty similar for all the 45-50 Mpx sensors. I ask as a matter of interest as I like to learn from direct comparisons from users.

I'm not seeing that either. I've had mine since a few weeks before official launch (don't ask) and I've had no issues with tracking at all. I've shot NHRA racing, fast flying ducks, Moose, Elk, and other animals and the R5II really jumps on the subject and is sticky. It needs cross points, but it really isn't that noticeable in the MKII. This camera tracks a bit better than my R3 and much better than my R5, and both of them outperform the competition from what I've seen (especially Nikon). They all beat the pants off my old 1DX MKII and 1DX MKIII. I'm not sure what you're looking for here, but they do a great job.

On the R7, not at all. On the R5 not with tracking on but does with tracking off. On the R5ii with tracking on.

that is useful to know... I use live view zoom all the time for focusing on stars for astrolandscape. Manual focus of course and then gaffa tape the focus ring.

I have an issue with my R5 Mark II that when I shoot with the screen everytime I engage the AF the screen skips a few frames resulting in a little stutter. This does not happen when I use the viewfinder. In the EVF the image is always smooth. Tried the same thing on my original R5 and it does not show the same behavior.
It is not a major issue for me, but with the powerful Digic X and accelerator I would expect that the camera is able to handle this better.

Hoping for a configurable rating button, I know many use it, but I don't. I'd use it for selecting E. level.

I've have R5m2 for about a week and so far I have missed the customizable button command for toggling pre-capture on/off. Menu command is just too slow in fast situations. Another issue is the implementation of the customizable button command for switching between two frame rate capture settings. This is implemented so that you have to keep pressing button down to stay in the mode configured for the button while I think a toggle would have worked much better.

Both of these options are needed to quickly reduce the number of images captured when 30fps capture is not required.

If you go to the a button with the camera icon, the sub menus choices have a pre capture choice that will allow you to turn it on and off.

As far as wishful features, it'd be nice to be able to set front & back focus limits and have the camera check the f# and take the needed step size and #frames to get a focus bracket sequence.

…the only thing I miss from my Fujifilm.

Some folk over on DPreview are saying it's out now on the Asia site and they've upgraded. One posted the change log:

Firmware Version 1.0.2 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. Incorporates support for frame rates of 23.98fps/24.00fps when using the LP-E6NH and LP-E6N battery.
2. The Wi-Fi connection status is now identifiable by the color of the [FTP Transfer Icon].
3. Adds [Protect Images] and [Rating] during FTP Transfer.
4. Adds the ability to change [Custom Shooting Mode] while writing images to the media (BUSY).
5. Fixes an issue in which the camera may become inoperable if a lens that does not communicate with the camera is attached when repeatedly shooting while using HDMI output.
6. Fixes an issue in which the camera may become inoperable if an image is cropped while other images are being transferred to an FTP server.
7. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur when using an application software such as Camera Connect, and the load on the smartphone increases.
8. Fixes an issue in which image stabilization may become unstable in movie mode when panning diagonally while using some stabilization rigs (such as monopod or handheld rigs).
9. Fixes an issue in which all images may not be copied when copying multiple selected images in the camera.
10. Fixes an issue in which another manufacturer devices (such as strobe or remote camera trigger) may work during pre-continuous shooting.
11. Fixes an issue that may, immediately after shooting, cause the screen to take a long time to turn off when using a button that has been assigned the "Screen off" function.
12. Fixes an issue in which Look File settings may apply to multiple custom picture files.
13. Fixes an issue in which the AF frame movement may not be smooth when several shooting information items are displayed and the multi-controller is operated.
14. Implements a fix to include custom pictures when saving camera settings.
15. Improves operation stability during network communication.
