What to expect on the 80D?

Now that the 7D2 is out, what features can we expect whent the 80D is released? I feel that improving FPS and AF will bring it too close to the 7D2. It already has some advantages (touch screen, wifi, swivel LCD). So what else is there to improve and not leap frog the APS-C flag ship ?

Cheers!

Lots of possibilities:

most welcome - new sensor tech :)

or hybrid optical/electronic view finder for live view and movies

or NFC ;D

and many others...

I would expect a 2018 release date......

Even if 70d stays as loooong as 60d (hope not), then 80d should be around 2016.

The defining moment will be 750D which should arrive before the 80D.
Having reordered the 7M2 I really fear that anything missing from my view in the 7D2 will show up for pocket money in the 750D.

With the 750D and the 7D2 defining the window I really wonder what to put into an 80D if not different sensor tech. At least the 70D now took this role once.

80D will be proceeded by 5DIV 1D XX & 6DII along with at least 3 Rebels and an SL II

BTW: an SLI with a pankae 24 is almost pocket sized hopefully they can improve upon that...

I think canon can just trickle down the DPAF to the 750D and call it a day :0

The 80D will probably have 4K video since I imagine that by then every one of their direct competitors will by the time it is released. Canon probably would have liked to include 4K with the 7D2 as well, but they were behind the curve and got caught flat-footed by Panasonic and Sony, and it was taking too long to retool the 7D2 to 4K so they dumped the current camera on the market to recover previous investment. The 80D will be what the 7D2 should have been, most likely fairly similar to the NX1 but a year later, just in time to see Panasonic/Sony/Samsung to move to their next generation of products.

I would question if the 80D will be released at all, since in all probability mirrorless cameras will have taken over that market segment by then. Cameras like the 70D are dinosaurs.

Muhahaha, is it time already for the "should I buy the 70d now or wait for the 80d" threads :-p ?

Imho the 80d is a looooong time away simply for product policy reasons. The 7d2 will have a long lifecycle as a "premium" camera body, and Canon cannot let a 80d come too close to it. On the other hand, they cannot do a minor update to the 70d either since it's not their style with xxd cameras (unlike Nikon d600->d610).

The innovation crop segment seems to be shut down for ~2years+, there just will be a bit trickling down of 70d features to the Rebels. And of course other innovation on the back ranks which are unlikely to appeal to CR enthusiasts (like my 6d can play audio files along the slide show - yippee!).

I love my dinosaur with its mirror slapping ability. tried the vr finder in a older point and shoot camera the Sony hr1. great Zoom ratio 5 megapixels a good stepping stone but just something try. real optics rule.

Silly question - who needs 4K video? Is this for commercial videographers, who have high-level post-processing computers and grading/editing software packages? Is this something that home movie shooters want? Can you get uninterrupted recording of 4K video on single cards (as opposed to heavier banks of storage units attached to other heavy video-associated gear attached to a high-grade tripod)? Or does the home movie shooter want a simple to operate GoPro or the new Ricoh/Pentax similar-sized adventure cam?

I do believe that a canon dslr model will get 4k video very soon - perhaps the 5dmk4. 4k is quickly becoming the norm. I was looking @ a bestbuy pamphlet this weekend and was surprised how much lower the price of 4k tvs compared to 10-12 months ago and more brands offering them. When it becomes cheaper they will be mainstream. For all we know, the next goPro release will have 4k - inevitable. Sandisk just released higher capacity cards didn't they?

4K video is *very* big news even to still photogs because it's enough resolution left to simply grab frames off the (uncompressed) video! Essentially you can shoot with 60 or even 120 fps for web sizes w/o flipping the mirror.

Btw Magic Lantern already has a silent pics burst function which fills the buffer with raw dng files from the sensor, but the current camera's video resolution simply is too low... 4k will break that limitation.
